Masters of Horror: Season 1 (half-sets) $19.xx at wal-mart
Wal Mart is selling the "half season" boxsets of Masters of Horror for $19.xx this week which is about $10 less (per set) than any other retailer I've seen (including Amazon) and combined comes to about $10-15 less than the complete boxset.
Apparently each half-season set will contain 6 episodes spread across 6 discs (meaning that the 13th film, Imprint, will be left out of the set).
I'm having trouble finding the exact episode listing for each disc, but I'd assume it looks like:
BOXSET 1
Disc 1. "Cigarette Burns" (John Carpenter)
Disc 2. "Dreams in the Witch House" (Stuart Gordon)
Disc 3. "Fair Haired Child" (William Malone)
Disc 4. "Jenifer" (Dario Argento)
Disc 5. "Sick Girl" (Lucky McKee)
Disc 6. "Deer Woman" (John Landis)
BOXSET 2
Disc 1. "Incident On and Off A Mountain Road" (Don Coscarelli)
Disc 2. "Dance of the Dead" (Tobe Hooper)
Disc 3. "Pick Me Up" (Larry Cohen)
Disc 4. "Homecoming" (Joe Dante)
Disc 5. "Haeckel's Tale" (John McNaughton)
Disc 6. "Chocolate" (Mick Garris)
I didn't see the full-series boxset at Wal Mart:
But it's $49 this week at best buy which is the cheapest I've seen it.

I haven't been able to find any images of how the half-season sets are packaged (Wal Mart only had the price labels up and hadn't brought the DVDs to the shelves at the time I was there)
My guess would be either a cardboard fold-out set (like used on some TV series') or thin-cases (which would be nice, but unlikely).
Unfortunately the "full series" boxset does not include the keep cases - rather it does an "Awesome/Horrible" combination (Much like the recent Ichi The Killer release which looked awesome but wasn't too functional).
So of course theres the awesome:
It's a very sturdy cardboard box with plastic interior and plastic decorations on the outside. The top pops off it and the entire set is stored inside of a clear plastic protector box.
It's shorter size allows it to sit nicely on a DVD shelf (I was afraid it might be too big to fit on mine if the cases were full-sized)
The shorter case also means:
Paper cases!
These are held in place securely by the plastic interior.
My last complaint is the cover art. While some had some neat artwork, these use a generic template for each film:
For about $4 a piece, I can't complain though (but I'll still try ).

The crap packaging of Season 1 made me start buying Season 2 in keepcases. I've only ordered one of them and would rethink my decision if the partial season sets weren't packaged so poorly.

I purchased this set yesterday and checked every disk in the set. Most had fingerprints and light scratches on them. I was so disgusted I decided today to just put the set up on ebay. why do companies have awesome looking sets and they just crap out when it comes to the actual packaging of the disks themselves?

I think I also found the actual disc contents for the boxset, and it's a bit different from my original guess (which came from the individual Blu Ray releases).
VOLUME 1
Disc #1 -- Cigarette Burns
Disc #2 -- Dreams in the Witch-House
Disc #3 -- Chocolate
Disc #4 -- Dance of the Dead
Disc #5 -- Incident On and Off a Mountain Road
Disc #6 -- Haeckel's Tale
VOLUME 2
Disc #1 -- Jenifer
Disc #2 -- Deer Woman
Disc #3 -- Sick Girl
Disc #4 -- Homecoming
Disc #5 -- Pick Me Up
Disc #6 -- The Fair Haired Child
Squall280: That's terrible!
Which set did you get, the full box (14 discs) or the individual volumes (6 discs)?
I was going to wait until this weekend to check through my (14 disc) box (for any duplicate discs or defective ones) but decided to do so now after reading your post.
Even just a few discs into checking I came across 2 that were badly damaged (Chocolate and Cigarette Burns) - moreso than any new DVD I've ever seen. All the others did appear to be covered in something - possibly bits of paper/cardboard from the sleeves as it was very apparent from just looking at the bottom of the discs. These were easily cleaned with a microfiber cloth, but I'll be running down to get a replacement for the damaged discs later tonight before the sets are gone.

So wait, if that list of episodes is from the BR release, and BR isnt getting a Season 1 box, does that mean that Imprint wont be included? I know Billy Drago was terrible in it, but I love all of Takashi Miike's work (Katakuri's, wooo).

Thanks for the reports guys. Since people have been having problems with their big box sets, I went down to Walmart and grabbed these two boxsets. Saved $10 over the big box, too! I guess for that I can do without the bonus disk (and the headache of scuffed discs).

I just assumed that they would've used the same episode-layout on these individual sets (the first 6 on 1 set, the 2nd 6 (minus imprint) on the other set).
The Blu Rays have imprint, the 14-disc box has imprint.. it's just the 6 disc sets that won't have it.
