I agree with bench, smith, mays, junior, and maddux..
cant say i saw enough of any of the others, or know enough about their defense.. to have much opinion..
wes parker is interesting at first.. because i havent heard of him.. but i cant think of alot of great defensive first basemen i would put on there either.

I'm surprised Ivan Rodriguez didn't win out

I would have given 1B to Keith Hernandez, Mattingly, and maybe Snow before I would Parker.

I know Ryne Sandberg (9) has almost double the amount of golden gloves then Morgan, I would take Alomar over him as well.

i didnt think of sandberg.. yea, he probably would have gotten my vote
pudge was a close 2nd to bench.. but i think i would still have to lean towards johnny

Bill Mazeroski won eight gold gloves, and is in the Hall of Fame mostly for his defense (and of course, his walk-off homer in Game 7). He was only a career .260 hitter.

Hernandez was easily the best defensive 1B I have ever seen, and the only guy I can think of who forced a rule change.

Plus, "I'm Keith Hernandez" simply sounds better than "I'm Wes Parker".

Yeah agree with Hernandez , and Sandberg but being a cub fan I'm a little biased.

Hernandez was definitely the most obvious snub.

I saw all nine of those men play, and I have no issues with any of them. Brooks Robinson has 16? For most guys that would be a lot, for him, he probably deserved a couple more.
Wes Parker was one of the best first basemen I ever saw.

I like the fact that Parker made the cut. I'm not too familiar with him, but it shows that the voting/poll results weren't slanted towards the 'big names'
As a Cards fan, I read initially that Edmonds was just edged out by Griffey for the final outfield spot. He'll be an interesting hall of fame candidate if he makes it to 400 home runs (which may be a stretch based on his current numbers/projections) with his defensive reputation.

Normally, I would say that Edmonds belongs in HoVG, but if freakin' Bill Maz can make the HoF, then maybe Jimmay will.
When he's 65 or 70.

I know Joe Morgan was a fantastic hitter, but was he really that great of a fielder?

Three Reds on the list, two of them from the Big Red Machine.

Everyone on the referenced list are in the top 5 all-time at their position EXCEPT Wes Parker. Pick on Morgan all you'd like, but would someone care to defend Parker's inclusion?

I think I-Rod, Robby alomar and Keith Hernandez got snubbed and based on the Gold Gloves won by each of these players, I may not be wrong on this. Hernandez should have been there only for the "I'm Keith Hernandez" acceptance speech.

The number of gold gloves does tell you something, but not everything. It tells you a guy was one of the best of his time...most folks would tell you though that guys sometimes win the award on 'reputation,' and even someone being a strong offensive candidate factors into some receiving votes.
If you look at the list of gold gloves, you see guys from different decades represented. What if Ivan Rodriguez and Johnny Bench had played in the same league and in the same era? Neither would have won as many gold gloves...but that shouldn't take away from the both of them being great.
The current generation of fans is likely to view great defensive players by the number of 'Web Gems' they've had. If only we'd seen Wes Parker on ESPN a bit more, we'd probably see how terrific he was with the glove. ;)

Bob Gibson could beat the shit out of everyone on that list.
Or out-stare them.

The only one that really makes me go huh? is Joe Morgan. Although I had read that Derek Jeter finished 2nd to Ozzie Smith at SS. Then I found out why, the team was voted on by the fans. So it's just as useful as the all-star balloting.

maybe there's a forum out there with a few wes parker fans, and they organized. The power of some other Otter, as it were.
