The "should i blind buy this DVD" thread.

iam sure i don't speak for myself when i say that i see lots of DVD titles in bargain bins and i wonder whether i should pick them up or not....of course like many ppl would do,i would check their imdb pages and see what ppl's reaction......then check a few online reviews...then head to rottentomatoes.com....then head to dvdcompare to see if there's any comparisons....but sometimes that's not enough....and sometimes you can't find enough online reviews....so i created this thread to see what ppl think about these titles...please don't hesitate to recommand to me or ask me to boycott any of the following titles:

Herzog's Invincible is pretty good... I loved Solaris (2002) but that's VERY much a hit or miss type of film, a lot of folks hated it... Not sure that I could recommend a blind buy, do you like "thinking man's" (I can't think of a better way to phrase it) science fiction?

I also liked Solaris. I could not recommend blindly buying things like Max or Down with Love.

I highly recommend The Statement. If you like Michael Caine, you shouldn't be disappointed.

the really strange thing is that i dont recognize most of those, and i thought i have seen just about everything within the past 20 years.

i liked this version of the importance of being earnest.
Avoid bad news bears.
As for the music, it is your preference.
father of the bride, it wasnt a tv version as far as i know, it was about stever martin going nuts for paying throught the nose for his daughters wedding, it was funny but unless you like romantic comedies, skip it.

something that i saw in the bargain bin lately that i recommend is the producers. There was one other last week that i had seen so many times i didnt pick it up, but i forget the title

15 Minutes was fairly entertaining, worth a rental or bargain bin price IMO.

I'm another vote for Solaris, but then again I love the novel and 1972 film so it would have had to be pretty bad for me not to like it.

the statement and bad news bears are both atleast rental worthy, i thought BNB was actually pretty decent, it didnt last long in theatres tho, i think it came out around august 2nd or 3rd a few years back. if you can get them for lets say 5 bucks each than id buy it. after that id rent only.

Men with Brooms was a good ‘feel good’ movie & if you enjoyed the TV series, Due South or Leslie Nielsen's work you wouldn't regret pick it up. It’s about curling but don’t worry it’s not boring.

The Tragically Hip even make an appearance!!!

It's not that it's bad. It's just that it's basically the exact same movie with less engaging child actors. More disappointing than bad.

I'd also avoid 15 Minutes (it was okay, but not something I want to watch more than once) and Novocaine. Can't really speak on the others.

"Standing in the Shadows of Motown" is great if you like the music at all. It's a good documentary even if you don't. It's a double disc set.

"Chrystal" is OK for a gloomy Southern-gothic style mood piece. Billy Bob does his low key mumbling thing. Lisa Blount gives a good, if somewhat stereotyped performance. Ultimately I don't think it's that great -- it is atmospheric though.

If by "Palm 29" you mean "29 Palms" I thought that it was pretty bad. Same type of
Spoiler:
narrative gimmick as Fat Girl
which I didn't care for either.

I thought that "Down With Love" was quite a lot of fun. A big plus if you are familiar with the late 50s-early 60s Doris Day - Rock Hudson movies and their ilk that this is spoofing / recreating. Even if you're not, it's pretty amusing.

Given that this a forum of movie buffs, if this thread sticks around long enough I wouldn't be surprised to see every movie on your list getting a nomination from someone around here. That being said, I'd give a thumbs up to "Stander"...I liked that one quite a bit. Also if the one you've got listed as "I Am Not Scared" is the Italian flick from a couple years back, then I'd give that one an enthusiastic thumbs up too.
