What are you people, stupid?

NPD Survey finds that Gamers are ignorant of what their Next-gen Consoles can offer

Both Microsoft and Sony have pushed High Definition visuals to the max with their Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles respectively. But, are the people or the ‘so-called’ gamers who buy such next-generation consoles even aware of the capabilities that these next-gen machines offer?

No, says a recent NPD report on Xbox 360 and PS3 owner habits. The report called “Next Gen Functionality & Usage” shows some very surprising numbers. Read on to get shocked.

According to the results of the NPD report, just 40% of PS3 owners were actually aware that the console had an in-built Blu-ray player. What’s even more surprising is that only 50% of these who were in the know, had popped in a Blu-ray movie during the last 10 times they switched on their PS3s. The other half didn’t use the feature.

Regarding the Xbox 360, only 30% who owned this console were aware of its HD graphic capabilities. And, it seems that PS3 owners are even ‘dumber’ because the number rose to 50% with regards to HD graphic knowledge.

NPD analyst Anita Frazier spoke to gaming site 1UP and said: “The industry is still in its infancy with regard to this “next-gen” and all the expanded capabilities of the systems. Gameplay is still king, and it may take awhile for the awareness and usage of the additional features to really take hold with consumers.”

Well, this report sure does dismiss all notions that PS3s and Xbox 360s were for hardcore gamers ‘only’. Put a PS3 controller in the hand of a tech geek and he will take you down so bad (we are talking about sucking out the optimum HD graphics capability of the PS3). This must be the only case which aptly displays that ignorance is NOT bliss.

Just kidding!

Now I didn't see this posted already, so if it is and I couldn't find it, then I'm the stupid one!

Another story said this was based on a survey of over 6,000 gamers!

Here's another take on this story.

It just goes to show that the vast majority of the population doesn't care about HD. Standard DVDs are "good enough" for most people.

I really don't understand how anyone could not know that the PS3 has a Blu-ray player, even if they are not interested in it. Sony is advertising the Blu-ray like there is no tomorrow...

Regarding the Xbox 360, only 30% who owned this console were aware of its HD graphic capabilities. And, it seems that PS3 owners are even ‘dumber’ because the number rose to 50% with regards to HD graphic knowledge.
Maybe I am not reading that right, but it sounds like the 360 owners are the ones who are "dumber". To me, it sounds like two-thirds of 360 owners don't know about the HD capabilities whereas half of PS3 owners don't know about it.

I take people not playing their Blu-Ray discs in their systems as less of a "dumb" and more of a "don't care".

HD is being pushed too soon.

it's hard to understand how you couldn't know that PS3 was a Blu-Ray player since it says it right on the box

i can understand a LITTLE more that some 360 people wouldn't know that games can be in hi-def

still dumb

I'm not shocked. Look at all the people who think they're seeing HD on their HDTVs, or those who actually like the stretch modes. Those of us who know about technology do not represent the public at large.

I think the real story is that most people just wanna play games on their GAME SYSTEMS more than they want to look at DVD's of any format. So obviously when they bought the PS3 and 360 dvd playing was not important to them.

<- One that doesn't care about watching dvd's on his game systems.

I'd be interested in more info regarding how many XBOX 360 and PS3 owners they actually surveyed, but haven't been able to find it. The most I've seen was this from 1up:
NPD Methodology
The report is based on online survey responses from 6,260 members of NPD's online consumer panel. These respondents, compromised of males and females ages 6 to 44, are qualified owners of at least one next generation system (PS3, PSP, Wii, NDS, Xbox 360). In addition, non-owners were captured in order to further probe on next generation system purchase intent and other areas.
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3161833
I dunno, when I see surveys I just like to have a better idea of how they put together their numbers. For all I know their group included ten six-year-old PS3 and XBOX 360 owners, and the majority of the rest are "non-owners." I'm not trying to insult NPD, but since I've never heard of them before I honestly don't know if this is just some random research company or an industry-recognized trusted source of information.

I play regular DVD's on my PS3 all the time. I only own one Blu-Ray movie and that's the one that came with the system

I don't see a reason to own a PS3 unless you did want Blu-ray.

That's the only reason we're considering one (well, that and I'd like to play Final Fantasy Versus XIII in 2012).

Actually, they are probably the biggest and most well known research company when it comes to consumer electronics and trends. They've been around since the late 60's if I'm not mistaken.

By then, the game will be $499 and include the console as a free pack-in.

That survey also said that 40% of 360 owners don't know that Xbox Live Arcade exists.

Me too...if I get one, it'll be for the Blu-Ray capabilities. No exclusive games that interest me. I guess if MS's "fixes" for the 360 don't work out, I'd consider that another reason for grabbing a PS3. I'm waiting until holiday time, I'm sure there'll be some decent deals. Apparently Game Crazy is giving you $50 extra towards a PS3 if you trade in a PS2 (like $40-60 trade in value)...but I'm waiting.

Who needs HD? Games look just as good on a 20 year old 13" TV, honest.

I agree that many people don't care about HD-DVD or Blu-Ray but I still don't get those who don't even use an HD display. These machines aren't meant to be played on a 27" tube Magnavox.

Buy a PS2 for $100 if that's all you're gonna do.......

Yeah, I read that on Joystiq yesterday. That is pretty freaking amazing. It's like an essential feature of the 360, IMO, and nearly half of the 360 owners don't know it exists.

What percentage of 360 owners use Live? I had thought it was like 80%, so that would account for half of the 360 owners who don't know about XBLA.

But the PS2/Xbox/Cube are no longer being supported with new software. If you want to keep playing new video games, you HAVE to buy the new hardware.
