Bizarre that they offer the Halo 3 one with an HDMI port but the 20GB HDD. I'm sick of all these new SKUs. The system is less than 2 years old and they already have four different versions.

The Halo console is tempting just for HDMI. Although, I would rather get the larger HDD. I guess you are paying $50 for Halo 3 colors, HDMI and Play & Charge kit. Not a "bad" deal.

It's obviously not for everyone but some people will like it and the price isn't bad, really.
I'll be going with the standard system unless someone can convince me that I'll get real benefits from HDMI vs Component. My TV has an available component connection but HDMI is full, so I'd actually prefer component unless there is a quality difference? I have no need for a 120GB harddrive.

It seems like from a marketing standpoint, Microsoft might want to put some effort into letting the public know that they've fixed the overheating problem (I'm assuming they have). Maybe I'm wrong - maybe the general public wasn't aware that they've had a high failure rate. However, the $1 billion repair solution was in the mainstream news, so it seems like people would know there have been problems now if they hadn't before, and that might make them more reluctant to choose the 360. A price drop alone doesn't seem like enough to me.

I didn't realize they weren't admitting a problem. I just kind of assumed they had done that when they announced the $1 billion repair plan/ three-year warranty extension. Seems foolish to me. At this point, I think they should admit they had a serious design flaw, they're spending a lot of money to correct it cost-free for the consumer (including refunds to those who already had theirs repaired), they've lowered the price, and people can have confidence if they didn't before.

That makes no sense. You can't upgrade things like the graphics card, RAM, processor, etc in a console like you can in a PC. No console has ever lasted 10 years, and neither will the 360. The 360 will look pretty dated in 10 years. The next-gen Xbox and PS4 will both be out in 3-4 years. Technology stands still for no one.

Yeah but according to Sony, they have a 10 year plan for the PS3. Of course no one knows what that 10 year plan is though.
Sony always mentions a 10 year plan. They did so with the PS1 and PS2 as well. All it means is that they will keep making the hardware for 10 years, it does not mean they will keep supporting the hardware with software however.
The PS1 hardware was manufactured for 10 years (or close to it). Up until just a few years ago, you could find a new PS1 in stores. PS1 software died off long before that, about when the PS2 came out.
The PS2 is in the same boat. PS2 software has died off. I don't think there are any big name releases still coming. Sony is still making the hardware though, and they will continue to do so for several more years.
The PS3 will be similar. When the PS4 comes out in 4 years or so, developers will stop making PS3 software, but the hardware will continue to be produced for some time.

From what I've read online, the Halo edition does not include the HDMI cable.
For those asking if its important to have a system with HDMI, its really only important if you have a 1080p TV, otherwise the difference between HDMI and component is little. The HDMI cable enables full 1080p output from the 360. Also worth considering is if you have the HD-DVD drive, etc.

Gaming "blogs" are reporting rumors that new stock of Core and Premiums may have 65nm AND an HDMI port.. but that they probably wouldn't hit retail shelves until the end of August or early September. I have to admit, it might be a bit wasteful, but I'll probably buy one for those two reasons.. as I've got a buyer to take my current 360 for $300, if I get one online to avoid tax it's just a $50 upgrade. Now there's just that pesky bit about transferring my XBLA titles over the new unit without crippling them to be "online only," or whatever the case was.

Most of the RRODs were unrelated to heat, which the smaller die will help with. Rather, there was a problem with the heat-sink x-clamp. So a 65 nm CPU won't necessarily fix the RROD problem.
That said, I would guess since they said the problem has been addressed that the newer HDMI consoles have resolved the issue. But then again, who knows...

You can see the new heatsink if you shine a flashlight through the ventilation on the back. Lots of people have seen it, both on new units and units shipped to them from the repair center.

But it could be that this is just their code for that same motherboard - maybe calling it an "Elite" motherboard was their initial idea, and changed it to avoid confusion? No idea.
