I bought a PS3. I wanted to play PS2 and PS1 games and wanted a Blu-Ray player. I started playing MGS and thought of a few old games that I loved back when I had my first Playstation. Two of these games were Syphon Filter and Jet Moto. I played the crap out of these games back then. I saw they were on the PSN so I downloaded them. Holy shit. How did we do it back then? Now these games suck ass. Graphics are horrible. Gameplay is just as bad. They are almost unplayable. I can barely tell what's going on in Syphon Filter. I can't tell what's a wall or a doorway. I can't even tell where I'm shooting. Back then I thought the game was great. MGS is a little better but still even with the upscaling it's incredibly blocky and using the d-pad to move around sucks.

A few other games I want to pick up again are the Ace Combat series and the Ridge Racers. But I'm afraid these will be the same big letdowns.

Anyone else play an older game recently and hate it because we are spoiled nowadays?

I've found that PS1 games seem to age the worst for me. Mainly because it was the first gen that used 3D polygons and the count was really low. I still love the look of most SNES games but even some excellent PS1 games are hard to play now because of the blocky graphics.

3D was terrible during the PS1/N64 days. The PlayStation just looked like an eye-jarring mess of super-sharp pixels and jagged edges, and the N64 looked the same, only you rubbed Vaseline all over the screen.

Now SNES games, I can replay over and over. A lot of those were the apex of 2D because you were only limited by your imagination, not the hardware. Note most of today's 2D-based games just add some 3D modeling and some lights and shadows. Nothing terribly exciting.

NES games are the same. Can't play them much because they look terrible, with some exceptions.

I tried to play Twisted Metal 2 a couple of months ago and while the gameplay is still great, it was too hard to look at to be enjoyable. TM Black has held up pretty well, though.

The best example I can come up for this is Raiders of the Lost Ark on the Atari 2600. I played it for hours when I was a kid and was obsessed with solving it.

Recently I played it again and thought, "This is truly the dumbest game ever made." Nothing made sense. There was no coherent logic in solving the "puzzles." Funny how years of playing smarter adventure games spoiled me.

Years of playing FPS games with mouselook capability have also spoiled me. Doom remains my all time favorite (graphics come secondary for me to gameplay), but I will only play it with a port that allows mouselook. I don't know how I played it in its original DOS format for so long.

Goldeneye hasn't aged well at all.

Castlevania: SotN is just as good now as it was then.

Mario 64 has aged remarkably well.

Most PSX games.. not so lucky.

PS1 games are the real problem for me.

I don't have issues with oldschool games or 2D games, SNES, NES, Atari all look and play fine - but some PS1 games are simply a jagged mess.

I was playing FF7 and I was having trouble telling what was going on with the blocky models on the projector. Awful. It was a bit better on the 37".

N64 games seem to be a bit better. I've had no issues with Mario 64 or Mario Kart 64.

I've been picking up Gamecube games for the Wii and I have to say that Capcom's Resident Evil control scheme has always sucked. But not knowing any better back then made it easier to deal with. But now, after having played so many games with awesome control/movement schemes...including Capcom's own Lost Planet, playing Resident Evil now just sucks all kinds of ass. I spend more time trying to keep my character from running into walls than killing Zombies. -ohbfrank-

I d/l Kid Icarus on the Wii VC and Im extremely disappointed. It took 20 frickin tries to get past the first level!! It makes me wonder how I ever completed most of those old NES games as kid. Nevertheless, the game didn't age well for me.

Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid leap to mind...and Tomb Raider as well.

With Resident Evil, it's the controls, which were frustrating then, but are even worse now.

As for Metal Gear Solid, I am so over stealth games...and the pace is unbearable. S'pose I'm just more of an action fan these days.

I don't think I could play the original Tomb Raider either after playing stuff like Prince of Persia.

All three of these games were BRILLIANT in their day.

While I agree the Resident Evil control scheme sucks something fierce, you have to remember that the original game came out before the analog stick was invented. Every early 3D game before the Dual Shock came out had chunky controls. Of course, Capcom should have gotten rid of the digital control for RE2 and 3, but they didn't...

Another problem with RE1-3 is that they just are not scary anymore. I tried to replay RE1 a few months ago, and the blocky zombie polygons were so laughable. I am embarrassed that those models actually scared me at one time...

Like most have said, the biggest problem with this are the old Playstation games. While many N64 games aged horribly, I'd say that I can go back to most N64 games much easier than I can go back to old Playstation games. Mario 64 is just as great as it always was, other than the camera since that aspect has improved so much over the years, and Mario Kart 64 is just as perfect today as it was years ago. I wish I could say the same about Golden Eye, but I just can't. I had an absolute ton of fun with that game, but I find it very hard to get into today. When it comes to FPS controls, I've totally since been spoiled with the advancements in gameplay.

I still love a few mentioned in this thread just as much as I always did. I still love the original TMNT game and Little Nemo. As for TMNT, people always did make that water level with the bombs much harder than it actually was. I know people who never even got past that stage, and I've never been able to understand it. I played it just the other day and I just about beat the game once again.

Final Fight for the Super Nes. It wasn't nearly as much fun as I remember. I would love to play Double Gragon again, but I don't have a 360.

That's how I feel most of the time. There are exceptions of course as there are still quite a few NES games I don't mind playing, but original PS games? No thank you. Most of those games are just too hard to look at and I don't have the same nostalgia for PS games as I do for NES, SNES, or Genesis games. I don't think I've played an original PS game since I bought my PS2. Plus, as mentioned, a lot of the controls are way off with the lack of analog support.

N64 games hold up a little better for me, mainly because the gameplay is so awesome. Those fantastic wrestling games (which look like ass), Beetle Adventure Racing, Mario 64, the Zelda's, and some other games
