SPOILERS if you haven't seen the movie.

I get that the movie was about the Lauren Bacall protecting her sister, after her sister got drugged up and killed sean regan. And Eddie mars was black mailing Lauren Bacall's character. And that bogart was hired by the general to find the sean regan and get rid of the blackmailer.

But I'm still not sure what was the point of the book sellers and who were all the bodies they found. And whos house was it they there were at? Was it regans?

any help would be great. thanks

I could just answer your questions, and I'm sure someone else will pretty soon, but I think this site (http://www.filmsite.org/bigs.html) will do a far better job at explaining everything better than I could right now.

And just because, I must now post this once again, Martha Vickers:

If you have the early and theatrical release dual version, there are some great features. I recall that the murderer of the driver/chaffeur was never resolved and even Raymond Chandler when asked about it responded that he didn't know.

I didn't think this movie was supposed to make sense?

The great thing about this movie is that it really doesn't matter and it's still great!

I don't think the makers of the film knew what the hell was going on.

Most of the film I found to be easy to understand, but there are a few gray areas that don't quite add up. Regardless of those facts, it's an amazing film and one of the best noirs I've ever seen.

I've read that in several different discussions of the movie - it has to be the ultimate noir if even the writer is left in the dark!

This movie made more sense to me than, for example, Out of the Past... but at times I did find it a bit convoluted.
Bogart's role in this movie almost comes off as random...the James Bond-esque role...but I have to admit that the scene in the bookstore is like the all-time sexiest movie scene. Somebody told me once that the director stuck that scene into the movie, even though it was rather insignifican plot-wise, just because he was so taken in by Dorothy Malone.

EDIT: Actually, I found where I saw that, it's the main comment here:

Now watch Dark Passage and then Key Largo and then you set go for the week.
