'Family Guy' pic possible, MacFarlane says

MONTREAL -- The team behind Fox's hit animated show "Family Guy" has been looking at possibly working on a "Family Guy" movie down the line, creator Seth MacFarlane told The Hollywood Reporter here Saturday. He also said Fox comedy "The Winner," on which he serves as an executive producer, may not be dead yet after new developments in recent weeks.

"It is looking like there could be a future life for 'The Winner.' I hope it pans out," MacFarlane said, without providing specifics. "We have been trying to figure out how to do that and the series at the same time without the series suffering," he said about a potential "Family Guy" feature, adding that this is a challenge that also caused the "Simpsons" film to come about so late.

One possible solution, according to MacFarlane, is to have Ricky Blitt, the creator of "Winner" and a longtime ex-writer for "Family Guy" who has since moved on to other work, start on the movie script.

However, he emphasized that he had no plot ideas yet, and Fox studio executives would have to sign off on a film project as well. "Nothing is official," he said, adding that if all things come together, a movie could be ready in a couple of years.

MacFarlane also said he would like to find a small story about the Griffin family that can be explored in a feature-length film. "I don't want to do 'The Griffins must save the world,' " he said. Asked if the success of the "Simpsons" movie would affect his interest in a big-screen version of "Family Guy," MacFarlane said no, predicting that "Simpsons" will make good money. "But it will be interesting to see if it works," he added.


MacFarlane talked to The Hollywood Reporter after a press conference with many of his "Family Guy" colleagues here. They are in town for some "Family Guy Live" readings as part of the Just for Laughs comedy festival.

Asked in the press conference about some Sept. 11 and terrorism jokes on "Family Guy" and how difficult it is to pull them off, MacFarlane said he feels enough time has passed for comedians to slowly explore the issue carefully.

"People are sort of trepidatiously dipping their toe in it," with skits on "Saturday Night Live" and the like, he said. Asked about gags that never made the air, MacFarlane said the team once had a Last Supper scene written. In it, when Jesus tells his disciples to drink the wine for it is his blood, "there is this huge comedy spit thing" that ensues, he said.

The "Family Guy" team didn't discuss in detail any other new projects they are looking at, but Alex Borstein said "some of us are developing some TV stuff." Mike Henry has been producing weekly videos for KickedInTheNuts.com, which he runs with his brother. Joked Seth Green: "I'm starting an online casino to get kids and their families together and make money for myself."

I haven't watched a Simpson’s episode in about 3 years because I think they got (IMHO) kind of stale. I had been buying the seasons as they came out (1-6) when I realized that I hadn't even opened most of them. When I realized I would never watch them I traded them all in.

Family Guy isn't as "knock down funny" as it was in its first run BC (Before Cancellation), but I still find enough in each new episode to keep watching. I am not sure the funny will translate into as full length feature, though.

I love Family Guy, so I'd definitely watch a movie. I'd just have to hope that they'd go for a hard R rating. If this come to happen, I wouldn't mind a bit.

Oh, I can be happy without threadcrapping on a TV show, it's just their are some TV shows I'm mystified why they are so popular. I know Family Guy isn't a ratings king or anything but come on, I heard that they are going to be doing a Star Wars parody for christ-sake! could they have tried any less at being original.
It's just sad that a show like Family Guy gets all the attention but yet the better show (In my opinion), King of the Hill gets piss poor ratings. Of course If i was locked in a room & had to pick between being forced too watch either Family Guy or American Dad, I would pick American Dad even through it's pretty bad as well. I'm just not a huge fan of Seth McFarlane's work.

Yeah, in my book it makes him come across as an attention whore trying to sponge off of The Simpsons Movie publicity. But I am a fan of Family Guy and wouldn't mind a movie if done right.

I would welcome a Family Guy movie. I think it's one of the few funny shows still left on televison these days. I would especially hope within a 90 minute movie, a good portion of that would be devoted to a lengthy Peter/Chicken battle of epic proportions.

If Seth can be "in the zone" like he was the for the episode "Meet the Quagmires" then I'd be all for a movie.

Peter singing "Axel F" was many, many times funnier that the groan inducing "Spider Pig" sequence shown for "The Simpsons" movie

I think discussing the fact that McFarlane is doing the movie, in part, because he follows whatever the Simpsons do is fair for the thread. As well as any criticism about the show.

Why can't we discuss why we wouldn't want to see the movie be made? It's all speculation at this point. We are not thread crapping on the OP's thread since all he did was post a story about it.

I have an interest in the movie's future...my interest is hoping that it doesn't get made.

There's a difference between going into like...a quotes thread or a review thread and just randomly saying "I don't ever want to see this movie and it is crap" and going into a thread about the possibility of a Family Guy movie and saying "I'd rather that not happen."

I guess you just don't understanding the difference between posting "I don't like Family Guy and won't be seeing this movie" and posting several vomiting icons and saying the show is "annoying".

And for the record, a Family Guy movie would be dated 5 minutes after it was written, so I can't imagine that an extended episode with jokes from a year ago would be worth seeing.

Family Guy has had numerous peaks where it easily out funnied The Simpsons.

Creed has always been many levels worse than the worst Pearl Jam.

I realize that The Simpsons has seen it's share of ups and downs, but Family Guy, after being brought back, has been largely retarded. It's a pop culture blender of 80's references, lame flashbacks and seemingly unending jokes. You knw, the kind that go on for way longer than they should, like Peter scraping his knee. A Family Guy movie just sounds like a terrible idea to cash in on the show's limited success.
