Proper conversion!
I don't see how black levels, no matter how black, can erase the awkward feeling of seeing poorly transfered video material (TV programming, Discs, etc) on a high-end home system.

Compression artifacts. Video of a dark night or a dark scene should be...well, dark, and not a bunch of square beepity-boopities, sprouting around like popcorn out of a hot oiled pan.

I guess for me it's going to be SSE (Silk Screen Effect - sparklies in bright portions of the screen), which makes me not consider most of the RPTVs with the high contrast screens, even though you get larger screen size for the money, the set is too distracting to me to watch if it has SSE.

Ditto, but add in wide viewing angle and bright room visibility.
I suffer from a mild color vision defect, so color isn't a biggie with me.

SDE, EE, RBE, pixellation, other compression artifacts, and digital noise. I can't narrow it down more, these all suck.

I would have to say proper proportions, as in: I can't stand stretch modes of any kind (even the so-called "smart" modes in some TVs). Although I don't like much of what's been mentioned so far as problems, I can usually suffer through them if it's the only way to see something. I can't watch something stretched even if it's free.

Ditto. To me it looks like a zillion ants on an anthill. What looks worst are night scenes with dense fog in black and white.

I hate it when my gamma is crushed :(
That and color saturation. If it doesn't look "right" I have a hard time enjoying it.
