i want to head to vegas for a weekend (fri-sat-sun) and to save money, im looking for the cheapest place to stay. and this time i dont mind not staying on the strip (which in the past i always have).

now i would prefer to stay on the strip but if not, thats ok (i can drive to the strip and just hang out there all day...all i need the hotel for is to sleep). however, i do not want to stay in some dump...it has to be a decent hotel.

any recommendations?

how are flamingos? imperial palace? barbary coast? tropicana? i know those are on the strip but ive never stayed at them before - are they nice? they arent the cheapest but for the strip some have decent prices.

as for the ones off the strip i have no idea what they are like. stuff like orleans, binions, terribles, gold nugget, riveria, plaza, el cortez, etc (just reading a list i found online).

I would check out the Stratosphere. I think they have pretty cheap rate for the weekend. www.stratospherehotel.com

I'd say the Flamingo or IP....because a lot of the CHEAP places are either sketchy, too far off the strip, sketchy + too far off the strip, or just suck. Circus Circus blows, The Strat is way too far away.

Maybe you should clarify what you consider to be a "dump". Places like the Orleans or some places downtown aren't great, but could still be acceptable. They're a step up from the Motel 6.
I personally would avoid anything from the Riviera towards downtown. Except the Wynn I guess. If you don't mind the kids, Excalibur is ok. I haven't stayed at the Sahara lately, but I know that has been redone fairly recently and their rates aren't too bad either.

I recommend Bill's/Barbary.

I would have suggested the Boardwalk but.....

Gold Coast is cheap as hell - not a total dump, but definitely not a strip hotel. More of a motel feeling. I'm not sure if the shuttle runs to Barbary anymore, but Palms and Rio are both within walking distance.

I was just at the Gold Coast last month, and they have "the Strip" listed as one of their shuttle stops (I think the Orleans is the other?). But I'm not sure where on the Strip exactly, since they don't own Barbary anymore.

the walk over to the palms and rio looked a little dangerous to me, maybe its not but it sure looked that way, so be careful with that. if you have a bus pass, 24 hours for 5 bucks, you can hop on the bus right on the corner and take it over to the rio.

as for hotels, i think the best bargain on the strip is the casino royale. while i love the former barbary coast, its not that cheap. casino royale is about $79 on a weekend day and bills/barbary is at least double that, imperial palace as well. circus and strat are much cheaper but pretty far down the strip, even if youre willing to buy a buss pass to get back into the action areas, quite a few busses will pass you up because theyre full from downtown or from the strip going downtown so i would spring for the extra money and move further into the strip.

It is. Both in terms of sketchiness and getting run over. The Rio has a shuttle
that runs to Caesars Palace, much safer than the walk to the strip.

Do you want on the strip? Downtown?

I like Orleans for cheap off strip.

Staying at Flamingo at the end of the month, but even a Wed, Thur, Fri night is right at $300. It is the weekends that are expensive.

As far as I know the Excalibur is very cheap. At least it's cheap compared to Mandalay, Luxor, New York, MGM and Monte Carlo which are all pretty much right next door. I don't know much about the Tropicana but it's right in the same area and is very old compared to the other hotels around. According to my sources the Tropicana is going to to do an extensive and expensive remodel in the near future.

Yeah, the Trop is going to undergo a major renovation and addition...I was glad to hear about it. As far as I'm concerned, if you're going to Vegas, you're going to be spending more than a little money anyway, so if you plan on spending most of your time on the strip and want to do it cheap, you might as well go ahead and stay someplace on the strip that's relatively affordable like Frontier, Circus Circus, or the Trop. If you can get one of the renovated rooms at Excalibur, it's an excellent deal. Hell, I've stayed at Circus Circus and it wasn't that bad...I probably only saw ten kids in the whole place during my stay there.

We did Excalibur once. We will never do it again. It is cheap and for a reason. They have an excellent steak restaurant and another restaurant with a nice bar. But the hotel/rooms/lounge all suck.

I could go on and on,

-they have the "want some free ticket" (time share dudes) guys posted everywhere. Seriously, unless it was after 1:00am, we got hit up at least TWICE each time going and coming from our room. So run upstairs to grab something get hit 2-3 times. Come back down to meet wife, get hit 2-3 times.
-service poor. I tried the $20 trick and was refused. No this is not poor service, but...when that was refused I asked to pay for an upgrade. She looked at me ugly and said $250 MORE per night!! WTF, there is not a $250 room in that place.
-when we checked out, they over charged us. When we made our reservations they pre-charged the first nigh, which is not unusual. But when we checked out they did not give us that credit. The lady kept insisting that we were not charged, yet I had printed the e-mail receipt where it CLEARLY showed we were. She kept telling me "sorry" yet would not change it. So I asked for a manager, who again just said sorry but wouldn't change it. I'm pissed now and ask to speak to his manager and when she came over, she looked at the bill, looked at my received, punched on their computer and looked at both the teller and other manager and said: "What's the problem? It shows right there we already charged him one night, he only owes us for two, not three". This was great, but then she did not say a word to me, but just walked off, as did the other manager. The teller just re-did my bill and without saying a word handed it back to me. I was furious. I said "Thank you" and she didn't even look up!!!
-The room smelled, was older and needed updating.

I will never go back there, I don't care how cheap it is. And I think the South end is great. Especially since Excalibur, Luxor and Mandalay Bay are all connected.
