Thanks. I got some fairly obscure stuff from there.

Anyone done this yet? Is there a catch?

I've done a handful of eMusic trials. No catch, just don't forget to cancel before your month is over.
Before anyone complains, I just want to point out that eMusic doesn't have all of the most popular music, they have more indie stuff. So, they definitely have good stuff there, it just might be stuff you never heard of :)

I never have a problem using all of my free selections on EMusic.

Last night I downloaded live shows by Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, some Blind Willie McTell, a Lewis Black comedy album, a Lead Belly album and some Ludwig Van.

Do you use a different e-mail address each time? I've never done more than one trial, but they'll occasionally give me 50 free downloads if I sign back up (which I do for a month, and then cancel again). It's always been under my original account, though.

Excellent choice of music. I too would like to hear how one can get several of these trials. I'm fairly certain I'll have all one hundred credits spent by tomm.

Methinks some folks are misunderstanding what a "trial" is. They're offering a great deal - why abuse it?

Well, similar to BMG's music membership, it could be that the company doesn't mind that much. Let's think about this quickly. Just because recycling accounts is not what BMG wants every member to do, doesn't mean that one shouldn't go ahead and take advantage of a good deal. No abuse as far as I can see.

Yea, I've used a different email and CC each time.

Oh, sure. I'm sure giving out free music without getting anything in return is just as they've written up their business model.

Thanks! I signed up and instantly got an album that I've wanted for a long time.

I don't care what the company's business model is. If you do, maybe you should go work for them.

Recycling accounts is not illegal, and if it against their wishes, they won't allow it. Period.

Just saying.

that didn't take long :) 100 tracks goes by fast.

canceling was a breeze as well, thanks OP.

I like the program though, I may join again at some point.

Justify and rationalize to your heart's content. Way to be the person who kills these kinds of deals for the customers giving them an honest look.

I liked it a lot more when it was $9.99 per month for unlimited downloads. Going from unlimited downloads to 40 for $9.99 was a bitter pill to swallow, and I totally altered my download pattern to only grab stuff I knew I would like, since I suddenly had to contend with burning up credits and waiting a month to get more (unless I wanted to pay extra for booster packs). At the same time they changed subscription models, it seemed like weeks would go by without anything new/worthwhile becoming available. (To be fair, I downloaded almost everything I wanted during the unlimited days, so there wasn't much left.)

They've sorted out the content issue, at least, and it is nice that all of your previous downloads can be redownloaded for free, even if you cancel and come back. I still don't keep my account open for more than a couple of months at a time, though; even if the average album cost ends up being around $3, lala is cheaper, and you get the full CD. I'm much more apt to try new stuff with lala, too, since I can just turn around and trade it to someone else if I don't like it.

They both have their perks, though. I hate taking the time to encode MP3s for the iPod from my CDs, so eMusic has the edge there. Unfortunately, my iPod is dead, so I would need to burn the eMusic MP3s onto CD in order to listen to them in the car. Sigh...

I signed up for the 25 free downloads several months ago and cancelled. I barely was able to find 25 which suited my tastes and it took nearly two weeks. I guess you really have to take chances on these obscure, indie artists.

I can't imagine how long it would take me to find 100 decent tracks...

Need recommendations Dan? Mention what type of music you frequently listen to and I am sure that there are several bands that can be suitable for your credit use. Right away I must exhort you to get Arcade Fire's Funeral and Neon Bible, arguably albums of the year when released.

Normally, I'd agree with you, but I'm not sure that it's costing this company any money should you abuse them. Still, it might be hurting their bandwidth and they may tighten things up and hurt potential new users.

Regina Spektor

As far as female artists go, definitely check out Cat Power, maybe Neko Case or Kristin Hersh (although I am not really a fan of the latter).

I'm going from memory here, but you might give Matthew Ebel a try - particularly his single =Drive Away= or anything else on the album =Beer & Coffee=. The album is over at iTunes now, but it was on emusic first and might still be there.

Emusic had 2 of my favorite bands - Flogging Molly, and Dropkick Murphys. That was cool. They also had some older punk stuff which made me happy, and I was thinking of joining. But I was dismayed to find that with many artists that I like, they only had compilation albums or stuff they did on soundtracks.

Awesome deal. I usually avoid digital music, as I prefer owning the physical discs, but you can't beat the price on this. I grabbed full albums by Caribou, Okkervil River, Hood, TV on the Radio, Spoon, Final Fantasy, Stars, Patrick Wolf and Black Lab, along with a couple b-sides from The Dears. Thanks OP!

Is the end near for eMusic's pricing model? According to Punknews, Epitaph Records is pulling their catalog because they want to charge $0.99 a song like iTunes. If you were thinking about trying them out, better try them soon with their current promo.

Thanks, OP! Some nice gems in there! I've grabbed some Alice Cooper, Crystal Method, Powder, Kevin Max and some holiday music already!

QUESTION:

Did anyone get the 75 free downloads rejoin offer??

I just want to be sure that the fineprint won't be forcing me to stay on for at least a month, unlike the initial join offer, where you can cancel before being charged. Kinda looks like they charge you 9.99$ right off the bat.

*This limited offer expires on Monday, December 31, 2007. By reactivating your eMusic account you agree that you have read, understand and agree to our terms and conditions. By clicking on the link above you will be reactivated into an eMusic Basic subscription with 30 downloads per month and charged $9.99. You will be billed on a 30 day cycle after your initial charge. There is no commitment and you can cancel online at any time. Your free downloads will be credited to your account after you reactivate your account and will be valid for 30 days.

I didn't get that offer, but I did rejoin through my same account for 50 free and then paid for another month anway. I figure 9.99 is a good enough deal for 1 month plus the 50 and I don't mind supporting the site a little.

DeltaSigChi4

Yeah. I tried it just to see, and they charged my cc 9.99$.

but it probably doesn't work for those that have already used a trial for them before, right? will have to do the usual and create a new accout thing, right?
