Need some Recomendations. Im looking for some good WWII movies.

Its been way to long since ive bought a DVD. Im a history buff so im looking some movies that resemble history the most. Im looking for some good WWII movies. I want ones like Schindlers list and Grey Zone that show more of the affect on the victims then ones that only show the army's fighting.

"Good Burger"

You may want to wait for the Criterion release, though.

Come and See, Downfall, and The Pianist are all good recommendations. I'll add Sophie Scholl and Night and Fog.

Downfall's good. Wolfgang 'good with water' Petersen's 'Das Boot' is an absolute classic as well. try n get the director's cut thing, i.e the really long one.

Actually, the "Director's Cut" of Das Boot is much shorter than the "really long" cut, which is called "The Original Uncut Version". (The director, Wolfgang Petersen, has said he prefers the shorter "Director's Cut" over the full-length "uncut" mini-series version.)

Also recommend:

Europa Europa

Zwartboek (Black Book) (this one just came out last year, so it probably isn't on DVD yet - watch for it when it is, though)

I saw A Thin Red Line in the Walmart dump bin today for $5 (they lowered their dump bin from $5.50 to $5), that has a all star cast and was a great WWII flick....

No love for the feature? Excellent film, IMO. Great take on the siege from a German perspective.

Plenty of love actually!

Problem is there isn't a single decent English-friendly release of this film. I can not recommend that you spend money on it.

I'd recommend "The Winter War", otherwise known as "Talvisota", which covers the Soviet invasion of Finland of 1939-40. The PAL version is supposedly better (and uncut), if you have a region free player. One of the more realistic war movies I have seen.

Sahara - Starring Humphrey Bogart. A great film made the same year as Casablanca in which he starred as a Tank commander lost behind German enemy lines. A terrific story that holds up well even today. Hope you have a chance to see and enjoy it sometime. It occasionally runs on Turner Classic Movies.

For the blackest of black comedy, try Catch-22. The movie is certainly uneven but numerous scenes are terrific IMO. Also features a great commentary with Steven Soderbergh and Mike Nichols.
