You need to check out some 70's Yakuza flicks. A lot of guys seemed to love the Yakuza Papers series, but I honestly couldn't get into those.

Graveyard of Honor and Sympathy for the Underdog, on the other hand, kicked major ass.

Kirk Douglas made one: The Brotherhood.
Tony Curtis, too: Lepke.
Stay away from Gene Kelly's The Black Hand -- really boring.

I think he may have only been referring to Italian gangster/mob films based on what he listed .. but I'm with ya Mondo on the Yakuza connection!! Next to Samurai films, Yakuza are my favorite.

In the event that I'm wrong, then I too would offer Yakuza Papers (the Japanese Godfather 1&2 equivalence), but not for starters .. as it's a very complex and weighty. Cops vs Thugs (http://six-string.dvdaf.com/owned/fukasaku-kinji) or Sonatine might be a good start. Check out Sezuki Seijun, Fukasaku Kinji or Kitano Takeshi as all of these directors have an arsenal of art-house/standard/ridiculous (not necessarily in a bad way)/well done films of this type.

As for Italian gangster, give this film a try: Murder Inc.

Coincidentally, I just saw this film last night for the first time and it was much better than I expected. Aside from the obvious cliches, it was obvious that Pollack really wanted to get the film right and it shows. The obligatory finale was extremely tense and what I would consider very realistic.

Although it's about British gangsters, The Long Good Friday is unquestionably a masterpiece of the genre.

I had a long list of old gangster films, but most aren't on DVD. Anyway, Dead End (1937) is a good one that is.

More recent films set in that era:

The Cotton Club
Billy Bathgate
Lansky
Mobsters

Johnny Dangerously and Bugsy Malone are both pretty good spoofs on the genre.
