Do you prefer singles or series for books?

When I want popcorn stories, I tend to like series. Even though mystery series become incredibly formulaic, those books are usuallyy easy to get into. I know all of the characters and setting already. It's why I've stuck with some of Patterson's books for as long as I did even though they were kind of trash.
But usually single books, as you call them, are better experiences.

I like to mix it up. I will be into a series and put a single story in after one or two of the series books. I am currently reading the Travis McGee series but have read a bunch of stand alone books in between.

I tend to prefer series. I have a hard time finding characters I like so when I do, it's good to have more material out there or on the way.

Hmm. I've been leaning towards series recently:
Lawrence Block's Matt Scudder Series
Stephen Hunter's Bob Lee Swagger and Earl Swagger series
John Sandford's Lucas Davenport "Prey" series
&
James Patterson's Alex Cross series

I prefer single books. Series usually make the story boring and I feel they are written only to repeat the succes of the first book and get more money from it. But it's not a rule

The only series I read with any regularity is Robert B. Parker's Spenser series, F. Paul Wilson's Repairman Jack and Terry Pratchett's Discworld books. Other than that I prefer stand alone stories. that isn't to say that if I discover a new series or one I've missed that is real good I won't read it.

I prefer singles, though I do read plenty of series.
My biggest beef about series is that I lose track of when the next book is supposed to come out, and then I eventually forget what happened in the last book. Especially with something like the Burke/Vachss books.

Series as long as each book is interesting enough. I can't remember which series it was but a book in the middle was just building events that payed off in the later book. Frankly it was boring and no payoff while reading it. At lease accomplish things in each book.
