with dvd planet how good are they on keeping their used versions right? There is a movie I want but it has been released in a few different versions. Now dvdplanet only has the most current version showing(the one I want) and the UPC matches the current version. He probably doesn't want to create another account, which would involve attaching his credit card to yet another vendor's site. That's the entire point to Google Checkout, though perhaps that point was lost on people who only care about the sign up bonus.

I thought it might be because he wants to use the same account to accumulate the rewards points. You should be able to log-in into DVDPlanet using the email address you signed up with Google Checkout and the password of GOOGLE if that was the concern (this is what I have been doing until I changed my password today).

Could someone explain to me how this selling my dvds to dvd planet works?
I'm looking up some dvds on the quote prices thing and I'm getting pretty good price results.
How long does this take, do I pay for shipping, etc.?
Anything would help.

Well, you set up a final quote and pack up the discs. You have to pay for shipping. Print out a copy of the quote and include it in the box and you also have to write the quote number on the box. The email you get with the quote includes all the needed info. I sent mine in May 15th and got my credit this past friday June 1st. Hope this helped.

Yeah, depending on how busy they are and how big your shipment is, it takes 10-35 days to get your credit. So, don't get in a hurry. I send in one big shipment every couple of months and have been happy selling and buying used DVDs with DVDPlanet/DigitalEyes for several years.

I've just been casually browsing, but from what I've seen most of DVDplanet's prices are a tad higher than DDD. Also, when you factor in shipping and tax, I'll definitely be passing on the planet.
I'm finding the same thing. Out of curiosity (because I really don't have the cash to spend!), I priced various seasons of Northern Exposure, Quantum Leap, Moonlighting, and Smallville as well as the Romancing the Stone/Jewel of the Nile gift set. DVDPlanet was higher on everything, from just a few cents higher to a whopping $15 higher on Smallville S1 (before extra 20% discount). Used DVDs might be a bargain, but I prefer new.

You have to remember even if it is a few cents cheaper at deepdiscount you will receive no frequent buyer points like you would at DVD Planet.
Now if we are talking in terms of dollars, then it makes more sense to order from deepdiscount.

Well, my order was cancelled due to authorization problems, even though there's enough in there. I'm starting to lose hope in Dvd Planet as of late. Some of my last orders have had problems, but I never got around to contacting them about it (these were around 3 months ago, been gone for a while, you may have noticed my absence). Mark Harrill, if you happen to glance at this thread, can you reinstate order # 1924011? I'm just about to leave for work, so I don't have the time to get a hold of Dvd Planet right this sec. Thanks.

Well, sometimes it makes sense to go for the frequent buyer points. You get 4 cents back per dollar spent (assuming you go for the whole enchilada $40 credit for $1000 spent, and if you are reading this thread, I'm guessing you are like me, and wait for that $1000 spent mark)
If a dvd is $20 at both Deep Discount and DVD Planet, then you would be better off getting it at DVD Planet since you would earn $.80 in credit (4 cents X $20= $.80)
But if a dvd is $20 dvd at Deep Discount and the DVD Planet is more than 20.80 for the same dvd, then you are better off getting it at Deep Discount.
For Criterion discs that are slightly cheaper at Deep Discount, you still get more bang for your buck at DVD Planet. For something like The Adventures of Superman Season 2, the price is substantially cheaper at Deep Discount, so it's a no-brainer (DD price $22.96 vs DVDP $29.95)

You are not taking into account that many DVD Planet customers, like myself, have accumulated hundreds of dollars in store credit by selling back DVDs we no longer want. It then becomes a choice of spending real out-of-pocket money at DDD or using up store credit at DVD Planet. When the prices are relatively close, I'd rather use up store credit than incur an out-of-pocket expense, even if I'm paying a few dollars more in store credit.

I'd like to preface this by saying that many of us were calling for DVDPlanet to do this sale as well, so a huge thanks to everybody there (as well as the folks at DeepDiscount) for continuing to do this for us.
Anyway, I'm really hoping this is my last order. Between the two sales my total has sky rocketed to $416.99, so much higher than I was prepared for. Nothing but Criterion's for me, this time around:

Videodrome - $20.77
Pickpocket - $20.77
Bicycle Thief - $20.77
Bad Sleep Well - $15.57

Pretty sure that would read "$28.95" if you remove the strikethrough from it. That's what the price is if you add $7.24 as well. Besides, I don't think it retails for $20.95. Does any HD-DVD retail for that low?

Anybody recommend Samurai Trilogy or Brazil Criterions ? I am eyeing both for blind buys. Would appreciate someone's opinion. Thanks.
I enjoyed the Samurai Trilogy, but the transfers were not stellar, with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1. If you are a fan of Mifune and the samurai genre, this might be a good set to get. But you never know with Criterion, they may come up with a new transfer that looks a lot better (Like they did with Brazil, Seven Samurai, Amacord, M,...). So I guess it's a reserved recommendation.
Brazil is decent. I have the previous non-anamorphic Criterion set which that have since improved upon with a new anamorphic release (so Criterion probably won't upgrade it again until they move into the HD market). There are a couple different cuts of the film on it. It's one of Gilliam's better movies and some think that it's his masterpiece, but even so, it's not one of my faves. May be worth a rental before you plunk down a big chunk of change on it if you have never seen it before.
Best,
Trev

It depends on how common your selected title is. If they have it in stock (as a new, unused copy) they'll likely just ship one of those out. If it is a common title, they'll likely wait till a used copy comes in. If it is a somewhat hard to find title (as in OOS) then you'll probably never, ever get it despite what the CSRs tell you.

I e-mailed DVD Planet specifically about Homicide: Life in the Streets - The Complete Series, and was told it was indeed discontinued. Shame since it would be only around $88 with this sale...
I ordered it for that price around 8 AM Central today, and it is still showing as in stock: link (http://www.dvdplanet.com/details.cfm?info=ANE076122)

Are items from the adult section packaged discreetly?
They are packed like any other item. The box does not scream porn or anything. :)

If you use a credit card to order, it wouldnt be charged until the items are shipped.
But what if I used paypal? Doesnt the entire amount get taken out of my account, even for out of stock items?
If you use PayPal it is immediately cleared.

Does anyone know if DVDplanet accepts used dvd's when the UPC doesn't match? I just went through a bunch, and althought the titles are correct, the UPC's on a few don't match exactly.
UPCS must match.

Really? A couple of times I've gotten unopened copies when ordering a "used" DVD. Mine never showed up as backordered, though. Why do you think they commonly fill backordered items with new product?
I've experienced all of the results I listed in my earlier statement regarding used DVDs. Depending on how uncommon the title is I've been cancelled and refunded (Open City- which showed up as backordered for 6 weeks), and for a while DVDPlanet was screwing up a bunch of my orders by fulfilling them in complete duplicates. So if my order included used titles I would occasionally be shipped a second "used" title or both that were factory sealed when there was only one in stock.
PS- All my dupes were returned.

Actually, DVD Planet accepts unopened copies in used trades, and presumably then resells them as "used". I know that I have traded in dozens of still sealed DVD's to them when I upgraded titles that I never got around to actually opening.
More than likely, the still sealed copies you got were indeed classified as "used" even though they were essentially still new.

I agree that DVDplanet reselling "used" product that they bought from people unopened is much more likely than them filling "used" orders with "new" product. My local Blockbuster always has 10 or so sealed copies mixed in with their used stuff, and I have sold them unopened product myself. I believe, at least in California, that it's illegal for thme to buy a sealed copy from an individual and then sell it as "new", which doesn't mean that they can't label it "used" and sell it at the same price.

When I called to inquire about the status of my Open City used DVD order, the CSRs both told me they would ship me a new copy when their "on order" shipment arrived. After a while I e-mailed Mark who said they weren't restocking it and authorized a refund.

Has anyone at DVD Planet actually confirmed that the 20 off coupon can be used multiple times for etail orders?
I've never actually tried to use a DVD Planet coupon more than once, but presumably there is no constraint preventing someone from applying a coupon more than once, or they wouldn't have this disclaimer printed above the coupon box: Coupon codes can only be used once per customer/family/address/e-mail address/account. Violation of this policy will result in the coupon being removed from your order.
I can understand why it may not be an issue, since I could go into the retail stores several times over the course of the sale and get the discount if I lived near one. However, I don't see where DVD Planet has actually confirmed that they have no problem with someone applying the code to multiple orders over the course of the sale at the etail site. Or have I missed it?

Just got a shipment email listing only the new dvd I ordered, and not the used Perversion Story that they said was in stock. Wonder how long this is all gonna take. This is gonna discourage me from ordering used dvds from them in the future. Not happy.
*UPDATE*
Ok, I just got an email from David Fulks telling me that someone else probably had it in their basket at the same time I did, and they just checked out before I did. He gave me 200 frequent buyer points as consolation, which counts as a $5 off coupon. So, I just bought Perversion Story brand new instead, and using the points and discount, came out to 50 cents cheaper than the used one anyway. Thanks, David.

I mentioned this last 20% sale but it may not have been seen - is there any reason DVD Planet doesn't have the Criterion edition of De Sica's Indiscretion of an American Wife/Terminal Station? It's on the DeepDiscount site, but over $32 pre-discount. I've always wondered why there's no listing at DVD Planet.

You should also consider Cleo From 9 To 5 if you don't already own it. Features cameos by Godard and your screen namesake.

"Agnes Varda, the lone woman in the French New Wave boys' club, made her reputation with her second feature Cleo from 5 to 7, a 90-minute drama set in real time exploring the internal turmoil of a flighty young pop singer who awaits the results of a medical examination for cancer. Leaving behind her elegant, almost antiseptic apartment for the bustle of the Parisian streets, she weaves through crowds and watches street performers while struggling with her fears and self-recriminations, confronting her shortcomings and finding hope in a chance meeting with a young soldier..." --Sean Axmaker

Yeah, I like Cleo from 9 to 5 a lot and the Godard/Karina scene is possibly the most adorable segment of any film.

So, I placed an order the first day if the sale for three used titles and used 1000 frequent buyer points to pay for it. Of course, two items shipped out and the criterion is now "back-ordered". I assume that I will not get the criterion title, but how will they reimburse me, store credit?
Didn't this happen last time they had a sale, that they would let people order used titles and then they ended up backordered? Or was that when the GCO discount first came out? I know this has happened to me before....

Why would you assume that? When it comes back in stock (which will probably be very quickly) they will ship it to you.

I wrote before about Paypal being charged right away when you order instead of using a credit card and only being charged when the order ships.
I've had some orders where I've paid paypal and some USED items were never received. One time I did receive one, I think but it was maybe 6 months later and had already gotten it elsewhere so I returned it.
This is a problem for me because I paid the full amount, and since the order was never filled because the used items were gone, but I was still allowed to order them, it's highly unlikely you'll ever receive them unless someone sells their used copy to them. And also if it's during a sale they'd be forced to send it for the lower price. So having used items on backorder screws things up because I've already paid for an item I may never receive.
