Definitely Snake. A better comparison for John McClane would be Riggs from Lethal Weapon. Both born out of the 80s, same genre, with 4 movies each.

17 years ago I'd say John Mclaine. He's smart as Coloumbo, crafty as MacGuyver and has as much heart as Rocky but time has softened him. Snake's a badass no matter how much time passes.

John McClane can take on 14 terrorists, an angry ex-wife, be beaten to bloody hell - all while barefoot- and still come out with a wisecrack and an asskicking.
