Paul Newman retires
Story via CHUD:
Apparently, he made a low-key announcement about his intention to retire on ABC's Good Morning America.

The reason:
"I'm not able to work anymore... at the level that I would want to. You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention. ... So I think that's pretty much a closed book for me."

He'll be missed. An actor of his quality is rare indeed. Just look at this list of accomplishments:
The Hustler
Cool Hand Luke
Butch Cassidy
The Sting
Towering Inferno
Slap Shot
The Verdict
The Color of Money
Road to Perdition
Empire Falls
Farewell Paul. We hope to know another like you again.

What his last big movie with him in a starring role? Had to be at least 10 years ago. I mean I know he was in Road to Perdition and what-not, but that wasn't "his" movie.
Wow I didn't know he had 12 years on Anthony Hopkins and Morgan Freeman.

One one hand it sucks to hear him flat out say that, but on the other hand it isn't like he's been doing much in terms of acting over the past 10-15 years anyway. Heck, on yet another hand you can't usually trust announcements like this anyway, so who knows.
And even though he hasn't done too much lately, he still did some outstanding work over that time. While not working too much, he still landed two Best Actor Oscar nominations, and co-stared in one of my personal favorite films of all time, The Hudsucker Proxy.
Either way, here's to one of the finest actors in the history of cinema.
Anyway, here are my favorite Paul Newman flicks:
-Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
-Cool Hand Luke
-The Hudsucker Proxy
-The Hustler
-The Sting
And then out of those, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting are my major favorites - Paul Newman and Robert Redford share a very special sort of cinematic chemistry that is very, very rare. It's a shame that they didn't work together more often. Even as recently as the past few years I've wished that they could work together on a major film, as the two main stars, just one more time. I guess the right script never came along in order to make that happen. Unhappy I believe I read a rumor a couple of years ago about them finding the right film to finally team together on once again, but nothing ever came of it. I really wish they could find something to do together once again, and then have that be Paul Newman's final film. That would be a fitting ending to his screen career.
It's a shame that Paul Newman only won one Oscar in his career (Best Leading Actor, The Color of Money).

Wasn't Cars his last flick?
Not a starring role -- a V.O. to be technical -- but still it was the last time I'll hear that voice on the big screen.

The Hustler is one of my top 10 favorite movies of all time. I grew up watching it with my dad. The league of actor he was in so few I can only say Tom Hanks of the modern class could think about being in it.
