2006-07 Season Finales: Rank or Grade 'em

Whether you watched five or fifty, I thought it might be fun if we had a thread to rank or grade this year's Season Finales. The 2006-07 season is pretty much over, for network shows at least. I only saw five this season. Spoilers, obviously.

5. Heroes -- "How To Stop An Exploding Man" -- Grade: C

"Five Years Gone" showed how much potential this show had and how flat-out awesome Heroes can be. The first season finale didn't live up to any of that. The Peter-Sylar fight was limp, the episode was very slow, and the overall payoff was unsatisfying. All the Heroes came together in the climactic scene, but were demoted to spectators. It was only Peter and Hiro (with all his training culminating in one stab) who did anything. A disappointing end to a very good season!

4. The Office -- "The Job" -- Grade: B

While still rip-roaringly hilarious at parts, I just can't get over what they've done to Jan, who was one of my favourite characters. They just did a complete 180 on her character and made her a crazy person. Also, three years of brewing romantic tension between Jim/Pam and all we get is Jim sticking his head through the door and asking if she was free for lunch? This finale lacked any of the really poignant moments that made "Casino Night" so memorable

3. Prison Break -- "Sona" -- Grade: B+

They could have ended it here. The first 50 minutes were wonderfully exciting, all the stories were getting closure. This would have been a fitting series finale if the brothers and Sara had just gotten away. What went down in the last 5-10 minutes was a little disappointing. But at least the writers found a cool enough way to set up their rehash of Season One next year.

2. Desperate Housewives -- "Getting Married Today" -- Grade: A-

Hey, so what if the Orson/Alma/Mother Hodge arc was supposed to last the season and find a resolution in the Season finale. Cherry and his team did a pretty decent job here. Set up some pretty interesting arcs for next season, and I'm glad they killed Edie. At least, I hope she's dead.

1. Lost -- "Through The Looking Glass" -- Grade: A+

My mind is blown. The best television I think I've ever watched. This episode had everything: drama, humour, suspense, action, intrigue, twists, and a massive game-changer. The acting, directing, writing, cinematography, and editing were brilliant. Matthew Fox gave a breathtaking performance, and needless to say I'm extremely excited for Season Four because I have no idea where it's going to go from here.

Numb3rs- very good
LOST- Excellent
Shark- very good
Criminal Minds- good

House- ranked it just "OK", because it didn't seem like a finale. I thought the "Jerk" was it b/c it wasn't on after that one and all the finales seemed to have aired. I guess it hasn't which is why I thought the previous episode didn't rank any higher than a 'good' as finale

Law and Order: SVU (A) - WOW! They are in for a rocky start next year. Great way to tie in everything that happened this year.

Shark (A) - Great end to a wonderful season. Loved the way Shark go away with everything to get him behind bars. Guess we'll see more of 7 of 9 in the courtroom next season. Glad it got renewed.

Heroes (A-) - I was hoping for a little more in the Sylar/Peter battle, but all in all it was great.

Lost (A-) - Way better than I thought. The flash-forward was a nice change. Hurley saved the day. Sawyer's the badass we always knew he was. And I'll miss that little hobbit.

Scrubs and The Office (B+) - Good ends to good seasons.

American Idol (B+) - I wanted Blake to win. And it was good to see everyone but Sanjaya... but Joe Perry more than made up for it.

Dancing with the Stars (B+) - Wanted Joey to win... so I was kinda bummed.

Law and Order (B) - All over the place... but better than last year.

Saturday Night Live (?) - Stupid tuner went out on my TV. Missed it, but from what I read, I didn't miss much.

Wow. That's quite a list. When do you find time to do anything else? I barely have time to watch about 9 shows a week.

24- C- (Horrible season).
Veronica Mars-B- (Would have been better with some closure).
Lost A+
Ugly Betty B (Too much of a downer).
Office- B- I don't like what they did with the Jan character either but liked the nice Pam and Jim touch at the end.
30 Rock- B+ (Some truely funny moments to what turned out to be a very good show after a slow start. Favorite new Comedy of the season).
My Name Is Earl- B (Good episode)
Scrubs- C+ (The whole Elliott and J. D. thing at the end ruined it for me).
Brothers and Sister's- A (Great show. Favorite new Drama of the season).

Heroes (B-) - The penultimate episode was much better than the lackluster finale. Part of the problem with Heroes is that a lot of the season was spent foreshadowing the events of the finale, so by the time we got there, there wasn't much they could do to surprise us. That being said, it still doesn't excuse the lame Peter/Sylar showdown. I wasn't expecting Neo vs. Smith here, but give me SOMETHING exciting to justify waiting half a season. Still, it didn't ruin what was an otherwise stellar first year(unlike Lost's dreadful first season finale). And the teaser at the end with Hiro was a nice capper, and a great homage to Evil Dead II's ending.

Lost (A-) - It only answered a couple major questions, namely would they be rescued and what would Charlie's fate be, and at the same time introduced about a dozen new mysteries, but Lost has almost completely recovered from its near disasterous start to Season 3. Some truly great character moments in the finale for just about everyone, even crappy characters like Charlie and Hurley. And a mindblowing ending that opens up a lot of possibilities for next year. The only downside is we have to wait til February 2008 to see what happens next.

24 (F) - A horrible ending to a horrible year. Aside from some nice pyrotechnics, there was nothing worthwhile in this 2-hour finale. It failed to give us any updates on the fates of some major characters(namely Logan and Palmer). The dialogue was cringe-worthy at times. There was numerous absurd moments like Cheng giving Phillip Bauer the circuitboard(WHY?!) or Jack not securing the circuitboard when he had his dad cornered(again, WHY?!). About the only two things they did right were not killing off Bill Buchanan(which may be moot anyway since he might not be returning) and managing to write out potentially 90% of the lackluster cast if they decide to do Season 7 in a different city and sans-CTU as they've promised. Attention 24 writers and producers, your show is officially on notice. One more season....screw that! One quarter of another season like this, and you'll be lucky if 5 million people are watching your finale next year.

The Office (A-) - Season 3 was uneven at times, although I'd be hardpressed to point out any truly bad episodes. And only a handful were mediocre. And although "The Job Parts I & II" didn't approach the brilliance of Season 2's ender "Casino Night", it came damn close. I disagree with the previous poster who complained about Jim sticking his head in the door and asking Pam out being a letdown. That was a perfect ending. Simple, but perfect. We don't need the big emotional kissing scene for those two. Not yet anyway. There's a lot of life left in this show and it's too soon for a moment like that. Jan does seem to be a little too over-the-top these days with her irrational behavior, but in fairness to the writers, there have been hints at her being emotionally unstable for a while now. It does seem ironic though that Michael is now the sane one in that relationship. And Ryan as Michael's boss in Season 4? Imagine the possibilities.

Smallville (B) - The first even numbered season finale to not disappoint. Season 2's was lame except for Lex's cliffhanger. Season 4's was downright awful which was only fitting since that was the show's worst year. But Season 6's had some nice moments. Even Lana didn't entirely suck. Clark finally told her the truth which was about 3 seasons too late frankly. Unfortunately I don't think the writers have the balls to keep Lana dead. I think we're stuck with her for another year. Chloe better be alive though!!! Easily the show's best character alongside Lex and Lionel. She deserves better than to go out like that. And Bizarro Superman....errrrr, Clark was a nice final shot. Of course at this rate the Superman villain gallery will be bare by the time Clark dons the tights and cape.

Grey's Anatomy (D+) - Much like 24, a bad ending to a bad year. I wish I could blame all this show's problems on the arrival of Marti "Satan" Noxon as a writer and executive producer, but the truth is things started going bad in the latter stages of Season 2. It just reached the breaking point this year. The "jump the shark" moment easily had to be Meredith "dying" in that 3-part ferry mess. And things only got worse after that debacle. The few remaining likable characters such as George and Derek were ruined by having them treat their respective wife and girlfriend like sh-t(THIS had Satan Noxon's fingerprints all over it). Addison, another likable character, was given nothing to do all year and then jettisoned to her own series which isn't looking much better. Karev was stuck with the Elephant Woman for a third of the season only to send her packing once she became a hottie. This storyline is a no win scenario either way. If she returns and hooks up with him, it's Izzie/Denny all over again. If she stays with Randal "Pink" Floyd, then it was an utter waste of our time. Shonda Rhimes and Co. better get their act together in Season 4. The first order of business should be firing Noxon. Unfortunately she's not only sticking around, but is running Private Practice as well. R.I.P. Grey's Anatomy.

Friday Night Lights (A-) - The best network series in 2006-07. So why not an A or A+ for the finale? Because now that we know it was a SEASON and not series finale, I really think the team should've lost the state title. And even if you disagree and still think they should've won, you have to admit the way they came back was absurd. It's ironic that the football games are the worst written part of this otherwise brilliantly scripted show. Everything else about the finale, and the season for that matter, was top notch however. They managed to make every character interesting, even the ones who on most other shows would've been a pain in the ass. And even if they won state, the writers still left open a whole bunch of storylines going into Season 2. I just hope they find a way to keep this from becoming a full blown soap opera as the series carries on. It's what killed One Tree Hill after its surprisingly strong first season.

The O.C. (A) - A great capper to a decent comeback, and as it turns out final, season. My main complaint about Season 4 was that nothing major was happening with any of the characters, but they more than made up for that with the series finale. A Return of the King-esque final segment saw about half a dozen endings spread out over what must've been almost 7 or 8 years managed to wrap up every lingering storyline the show had. About the only thing we don't know for sure is if Ryan and Taylor ended up together, but I kinda like the writers leaving that one ambiguous. I'm torn that we won't see these characters again, but I'm also pleased they were able to go out on top. Something I never would've thought possible a year ago when Ryan was holding a dying Marissa in his arms and I had a hard time giving a rat's ass.

The Class (B) - A pretty solid ending to a show that started off horribly and got progressively better during the course of its abbreviated season. Unfortunately it also had to deal with the reality of being on CBS where nearly 10 million weekly viewers won't cut it, so now we'll never know what happens with any of these characters.

Scrubs - B. Ok episode, like others the last scene spoiled it for me. I also wasn't satisfied with preggo's rational for faking the miscarriage. On the plus side it had some great JD/Turk moments.

Supernatural - A. Very good episode, lots of action but I have to say the resolution to the yellow eyed demon story was just a little weak. It's not so much because of what happened in this episode, although it did feel a bit by the numbers, but they should have had 1 or 2 more regular season eps focus on it in order to build it up. It really suffered from being on the back burner too long.

My Name is Earl - A. Solid episode, there have been a few duds in season 2 so it was nice to see the show back in form for the finale.

Prison Break - B+. Of course the re-setup of the Prison Break formula is unbelievable and the Panama prison/legal system looked ridiculous, but then the American systems were portrayed with just as much accuracy, so what the hell. Next season looks like it will be a fun ride.

Stargate SG-1 - B+. (very mild spoilers for US broadcast watchers)
Spoiler:
It was a great regular episode, but just good as a series finale. On the positive side it focused nicely on the SG-1 team, and even though the plot was thin it didn't drag. On the negative side it didn't wrap anything up and only felt vaguely like a series finale. A lot of that comes from the fact that there will be TV movies in the future, but I still would have like some kind of closure or acknowledgment of the end of the regular series.

Stargate Atlantis - B-.(ditto)
Spoiler:
Kind of the opposite of the SG-1 finale this was all action. I'm not a fan of the new (really old) improved replicators and the plot wasn't anything that special, so it lost points for me there. Still there were some good lines and nice action, so it balanced out.

Veronica Mars - A. A really great episode mildly hurt by the fact that it didn't provide closure as a series finally. Like others have said the saddest part is that it took until the final episode (or two) for the series to get back into it's old form.

30 Rock - B. If the season had ended with the previous episode, "Cleveland", it would have gotten an A+, but the finale was a bit underwhelming as a follow-up.

I’m lonely No, And thats not all I watch either during the 'Primetime' season. I also watch tons of season sets and movies on DVD that I buy. Don't worry I have a job naturally, work nights 11pm-7am.

Probably because they didn't want their season finale going up against the finales of American Idol, Dancing With the Stars, and Lost. I think a dozen people would've tuned into One Tree Hill that night, and most of those would've been family and friends of the cast.

Yeah, I can't imagine anyone would have watched it against those shows. And Red Dog there are 3 left. The finale is on the 13th of June with new episodes every wednesday until.

tv.com says 2 episodes left.

The last episode just seemed like a season finale.
