The Bob Dylan Mixtape Challenge

Okay, here's the deal. Looking to make a Bob Dylan mixtape for my upcoming road trip and I need a little help from my MusicTalk friends. Obviously, we could all fill up several CDs worth of hits from Dylan and each would be a fantastic mix. But, those are songs we've all heard a million times before. For this mix, I want to uncover some of the hidden gems that often get overlooked. I've got plenty in mind and I'm sure you do too. Therefore, help me make a Dylan mixtape with none of the "greatest hits". In order to keep this easy, we will consider any songs off of his three Greatest Hits albums and the Essential album to be off limits. Here they are:

A couple of my absolute favorite Dylan tunes...

"Goin' to Acapulco"

"I'm not there"

Both are from the Basement Tapes, though I'm talking about the *complete* ones. "Acapulco" does show up on that (rather terrible) official release with the screwed up stereo and way too few tunes, but "I'm not there" does not (in keeping with its title, perhaps).

More:
Idiot Wind (Blood on the Tracks)
Seven Curses (Bootleg Series 1-3)
Love Minus Zero/No Limit, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), Gates of Eden (Bringing It All Back Home)
Visions of Johanna (I prefer Live 1966, but Blonde on Blonde version is great, too)
4th Time Around (Blonde on Blonde)

And so many more it seems silly to stop here... (but I will)

We should be able to include the 'Tonight I'll Be Staying Here with You" from the bootleg version. It's basically completely different....and better than the original

you could bookend your mixtape with Idiot Wind - there is a great stipped down version on the bootleg series boxset - even nastier if that's conceivable.

Although I listed the "Blood on the Tracks" version of "Idiot Wind" above, I like the acoustic version on Bootleg Series 1-3 every bit as much and possibly more.

"Girl from the North Country" is a flawless song. My only other recommendation, "Not Dark Yet" is on the essential album.

I don't like Dylan much.

Here's a few I don't think have been mentioned...

"Emotionally Yours" (Empire Burlesque) A very sweet song.

"Dark Eyes" (Empire Burlesque) A throwback to his early days (and very out of place on that album, but in a good way).

"New Danville Girl" This is the earlier, better version of "Brownsville Girl". I've only seen this on one of the Genuine Bootleg Series, but if you can track it down, it's well worth it.

"Bonnie Ship the Diamond" (unreleased Basement Tapes) A fishing song that sounds a bit sinister (to these ears).

"All You Have to Do is Dream (take 1)" (unreleased Basement Tapes) Kinda sloppy sounding, yet oddly tuneful. Very suprised that this wasn't covered in the 60's.

"Idiot Wind" (live version from Hard Rain) I know this song's been mentioned, but the one from Hard Rain is fucking lethal.

^Sorry, missed it. Anyway, just count the rest of my choices.

Just realized, I also missed "Changing of the Guards". I'll elide those two.

Too lazy to list an entire mix, but include "Buckets of Rain" and "Fourth Time Around."

Edited to add: "Love Sick" is a hell of a song as well.

cheers,
