COMING HOME (1978) vs BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY (1989)

Which is the better film? Both deal with the Vietnam war, and about a soldier returning from the war in a wheelchair (Jon Voight, Coming Home and Tom Cruise, Born On The Fourth of July)

Never seen 'Coming Home' and I love Born on the Fourth on July. Tom Cruise should've won the Oscar; its the best he's ever been save for Magnolia. At least they had enough sense to give Oliver Stone the Oscar for his brilliant direction. Not to mention John Williams' incredibly powerful score perfectly captures the emotional intensity of the film.

I saw Coming Home when it first came out! (guess my age), good film and very well acted, but IMO Cruise in Born on the fourth of July was even better. As Robert says, I always thought he deserved the Oscar for that performance too, and the film itself IMO is an all round better movie as it shows the effect of war not only on the ex marine, but on the entire family structure as a whole.
