Metrodome have announced the UK DVD release of Transformers: The Movie (Ultimate Edition) on 4th June 2007. The original animated movie returns to DVD once again, this time in advance of the new live-action feature due in cinemas from July, with this Ultimate Edition release offering a new remastered widescreen transfer specially made for this DVD.

Also included are all-new special features, including an interview with story consultant Flint Dille, a Q&A with the voice of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen and the trailer of the forthcoming live-action movie.

The full rundown of features…

Disc 1
Remastered Widescreen version with 5.1 Audio/Stereo Option
Commentary with Transformers expert Chris McFeely
Alternate US/UK version footage plus branching option
US Theatrical Trailer
Japanese Trailer
US TV Spots
Final Title Check Test
Cinex Check – Colour and Exposure Check
Character Biographies
New Transformers: The Movie Trailer

Disc 2
Original 4:3 version of the movie
Exclusive interview with Flint Dille (Story Consultant)
The voice of Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen Q&A
Exclusive Japanese Scramble City Episode
Deleted and Alternative Scenes
Paramount’s 'Transformers' live action movie trailers
Animated Storyboards
DVD Rom material: Original movie script and 5.1 audio breakdown
Exclusive booklet written by Transformers expert Chris McFeely

The first few-thousand customers can pick up a Limited Edition Tin Box version. Retail is £22.99.

There is also a single-disc edition, featuring just the first-disc of the two-disc set, priced at £15.99.

Found some intriguing screenshot comparisons while researching this release:

I have held off on all the previous releases and it's probably a bad idea to get excited, but maybe it's finally time to make a purchase. Not a fan of the cover art though.

If anyone finds any new info regarding the a/v quality for this, please post. Also any decent prices for US residents. Best price I found for the 2 disc set was at Amazon.co.uk at £15.83 including shipping - about $32.

It has also just been given a [very limited] theatrical re-release in the UK - presumably as a platform for this special edition...

Dazza.

Hot Rod is still pink and some of the other colours look over-saturated. I'll avoid this release too.

Don't judge till you see the final product.

Another review:

Pretty exhaustive and detailed comparison review with several screen shots.

No clear winner, which is not surprising. But this release has a remastered progressive widescreen transfer, so I will bite.

The Ultimate edition looks a lot better than the Sony offering, but it seems a little took dark at some places...and Unicron looks kind of green.

Still, best option for me is to get the Sony disc as well, not for the extras but because of the open matte version, which UE only has as the UK version which I don't care of at all.
