"Hurt" by Criticism, 24 Boss plans to "Reinvent" Show

Well at least they are listening:

From TV Guide:

Let's face it — 24 simply ain't what it used to be. Granted, living up to last season's benchmark was a near-impossible feat, but still... this season has been lambasted by many for being highly derivative of "days" gone by and even harder-to-believe than expected. Addressing the backlash, executive producer Howard Gordon tells the Los Angeles Times, "It hurts to hear the criticism," then goes on to say that such words which haven't killed Jack Bauer will only make him stronger next timer around. "It's been a challenging season to write... but it's reinvigorated our determination to reinvent the show," says Gordon. "This year could be... the last iteration of its current state."

What sort of "reinvention" does Gordon have in mind? "I've got a couple of ideas, none of which I could even begin to share responsibly," he says. "[But] it won't be a musical." So much for ever hearing "It Had to be CTU (Bauer's Ballad)."
I hope this means just Jack Bauer, or maybe prequel Jack to his delta days or something.

Glad they hear our complaints.

Let's see what they do next year. I'm more than willing to just write off this year and be back next season.

Hmm. After this season, I'd almost like the show to end. Yes, that is how much I horribly disliked this season. Sorry to "hurt" you Howard, but crap is crap. Thanks at least for finally owning up to it instead of blaming the likes of Drive for this season's sagging ratings.

Glad someone behind the scenes is listening. Now it is a matter of doing something about it.

Same here. I'm even to the point where I don't think i would want to go back and watch older seasons again.

When ratings were slipping in season 1, they were talking about making season 2 have stand-alone episodes (each taking place over a 24 hour period). I wonder if that's what they are considering here?

Hmmm ... given the track record of Fox "reinventions" I have low expectations.

Oh I hope not. I remember that news story. It was a bad idea then and it's a bad idea now, despite how awful season 6 has been.

Personally I'm all for them sticking to real time and making next season all about Jack. There's also nothing in the show's title or format that even says it has to be about terrorism. For example, they could go all the way back to the original concept of 24: a romantic comedy taking place on the day of a wedding. Starring Kiefer Sutherland.

Or, as my signature suggests, rename the show "Tony-Four". I know I'd watch.

Go out on top. To end it after this season would leave a sour taste in my mouth, just like X-files did.

Exactly. Every show is allowed to have a bad season every now and then.

Seasons 1 - 3 were great. Season 4 was good the first time through, but didn't hold up to repeat viewings all that well. Season 5 wasn't bad, but it still wasn't as good as the first 3. Season 6, however, is the first season where there have been more than 2 episodes I haven't enjoyed on some level. That's just my opinion, though; I'm sure others would disagree.

Howard needs to pass his thoughts off to Joel Surnow. I watched that 24 Inside Interview last week and Joel seems to think Season 6 is going great.

Howard must have actually been reading some of the message boards ripping the show to shreads since episode 5 and I hope he's taking some of the ideas passed off there into consideration. I know he usually writes the season premiere, so we'll see come January 08.

Yep. It would be horrible to go out on this season. I'm more than willing to give it another go next January.

A little over 10 million viewers right now. Not horrible by any means, but still not up to par with Season 4 and 5's ratings.

Season 5 was a really tough season to follow because it was so good. Still, we deserved better than what we're getting now. And I think every season prior to 6 has had quite a few redeeming values and couldn't be classified as "bad", unlike the current one.

No they're not. Bad episodes sure, but not whole seasons
