Joshua Tree Gold CD...worth $200? Also when is U2 gonna remaster their albums?

OK first of all, I am seriously considering picking up the 24KGold Remastered version of the Joshua Tree. They're asking like $200 for it though I'm wondering if it's worth it? How much better do you suspect it sounds over the original pressing? Also is there a gold version of R&H?

Also, when in the flying f*ck is U2 going to get on the ball and remaster their catalog? October, Boy, and War are in desperate....I mean DESPERATE need of a remaster! October in particular sound AWFUL to me now. Please tell me someone has heard something about these albums being remastered!

That's a lot of dough for one album. And like you say, the "classic" U2 albums are due for remastering & rerelease any year now (in fact I believe I read an announcement along those lines a few months ago, but so far no details).

Anyway, I'd hold off if I were you. But to each his own.

I have the MFSL "Joshua Tree" and love it, but I wouldn't pay $200 for it.

MFSL also released "War" and "The Unforgettable Fire," which I also have, but they didn't remaster anything else by U2. I wish the company had lasted long enough to do "Achtung Baby."

Mr Salty,

how much better does JT and UF sound over their original pressings? I mean, does it outdo an SACD? Is it up there with the Cure remasters?

I can't say if they'd outdo an SACD (although the prospect of a remastered JT on SACD is enough to make me drool), but they sound heads and tails better than their stock pressings. You should be able to find UF for a reasonable price, but it's up to you whether JT is worth $250.

In an era of MP3s, I'm glad there are people out there who still give a damn about sound quality.

I sold my copy in the past year or so, and it went for around $110. I don't think they are going for >$200, perhaps a sealed new copy? You could buy it, see how it sounds, and then resell it to get your money back. Maybe you make a couple bucks, maybe you lose a couple bucks, but then you'll have gotten to listen to it (or put it on your iPod) while you own it.

If you encode the MP3s high enough, they still sound better than the current issue discs.

some of us care about sound quality and like to rip our cd's to listen to on random. If I'm just in a mood to listen to music on random, I'll listen to my rips, when I want to experience the album, I'll play the cd/DVD-audio from start to finish. You can do both

That's nice, but it has nothing to do with the post I was replying to. That poster suggested buying it, ripping it to an iPod, and then selling it, which would indeed defeat the purpose of spending the money on an OOP MFSL disc.

yeah, considering that's probably less than half of what a new one retailed for originally

I have the MFSL of War, but I see it's worth a fraction of Joshua.
