Is 'The Shield' worth a blind-buy?
Never seen it, but I am a big fan of 'The Wire' (especially the most recent season), so I'm thinking it's a good probability.

Hell yes, buy it at once. I too am a fan of The Wire (in the middle of Season 3), but these are very different shows. Both are the best police dramas out their in their own ways.

Worth a blind buy? Hell. Yes.
Caught season 1 as reruns on FX and ended up spending a weekend renting and watching seasons 2-4. Just bought season 5 tonight, in fact, to watch before season 6 premieres next week.
Easily one of my favorite shows of all time.

Not really a lot of mixed signals here, huh?
Okay, I'm sold. Thanks.
(Hey! I just noiced that Fain/Craft from the 'Angel' writing staff worked on the show - I didn't realize that.)

Ok I'll go against the grain W/ the number of DVDs out there, the variety of tastes and the number of ways to rent/view programs before deciding on whether or not to buy, IMHO there are very few things that are worth buying blind. That being said I do enjoy the Shield and recommend at least checking it out, but I can see where people would not like it.
Also, I don't think you'll automatically like it just because you like The Wire. They are similar in that they are both "hard hitting" (or whatever catch phrase you want to use) cop shows, but they are very different in their approach to the subject matter. The Wire is generally a little more techinical/procedural and from what I've seen (IIRC I've only seen the first two seasons) each season is a complete story. Whereas The Shield is more character driven and there are storylines that run through the entire series.

This might be harder than I thought. Damn, the packaging on these things is even worse than 'Battlestar Galactica'! I can't find a single copy in the racks here of the first three seasons that doesn't have a BADLY damaged cover. It's like those flimsy metallic paper boxes were DESIGNED to be wrecked in the stores.

The Wire is a procedural that focuses on the why of things.
The Shield is a in your face action piece that focuses on actions and consequences.
Buy The Wire for content (as far as I am concerned, this will be cemented as the best TV show ever). But The Shield for content and extras (it isn't as complex as The Wire, but it packs a major punch...awesome extras on all DVD's)
