Will the Trek Series Box Sets Get Their Prices Lowered Further Anytime Soon?
Seeing that it's TNG's 20th anniversary this year, I'd love to get the whole series on DVD, but the price tag's a bit too high at present (Buy.com has the lowest price I know of at around $280). Do you think it will drop under $200 this year?
The same question applies to DS9 as well. (I have all of TOS, and I don't much care for VGR and ENT).

Voyager and enterprise will probably drop to ~$50/season this year. There's no real reason to drop the prices of the original series, the next generation, or Deep Space 9 again.

I think the only time you'll see another drop is when DVD is beginning to phase out (in 10 years or so).

$280 for a series, at seven seasons is $40 a season. Next Gen had 178 episodes. That comes to just a little over $1.50 per episode (not counting the bonus features), and the episodes used to sell individually for $14.99 each on crappy quality VHS tape.

I wouldn't expect a price drop for a while (other than Voyager and Enterprise dropping to the level of TOS, TNG, and DS9).
One thing I think might be possible would be for certain stores or promotions rather than official price reduction, like how The X-Files was available for around $18 a season for a while there. But I wouldn't hold my breath...
Paramount sort of has a Star Trek problem. With twenty-eight seasons of material that's a lot of shelf space these things take up in stores. I rarely see anything but recent Star Trek material in stores, with the exception of the three TOS seasons. Stores don't seem to want to bother stocking TNG, DS9, and VOY in any kind of depth. (Compare with Buffy and Angel, which I still see filling up store shelves.) So it would probably be in Paramount's interest to run some promotions like $17.99-$19.99 per season, just to get the things back into stores. Especially with Wal-Mart and Target.

I thought there was a repackage of next generation on the horizon in complete series slim cases. One of the sites said it was available in another region and likely here in the future.

Voyager season 7 came out in December of 04. Next Gen season 7 came out in December of 02. DS9 season 7 came out in December of 03. Next Gen had the first price drops, followed shortly by DS9, then they started dropping together. So I'm guessing that Voyager will probably start dropping some time this summer. Enterprise might drop at the same time, or it might not drop until around this time next year.

I can verify both, especially the latter, from my days in retail. Sadly, we'd see high ticket DVD's (mostly box sets, TV or otherwise) getting lifted all the time. Since what most shoplifters do is re-sell the DVD's they stole as used product to other stores, the higher the initial retail price, the more money they end up getting for them. And since there are very few ways to completely prevent people from stealing, one of the few choices retailers end up having is to not stock the product (or as much of it) at all - and just get it for customers truly looking to buy it on a special order basis.

Almost 4 years later now.....and was only lucky enough to get on the Gohastings deal for TNG....and still no sign of being able to get DS9 or Voyager cheap.

Unless you get lucky and find individual season sets of DS9 and Voyager at your local Big Lots for $10.
BTW I've only been lucky to find a couple of the sets recently.

Same here, though I just purchased a second region free player and plan on getting DS9 that way and saving a little.

Re: Will the Trek Series Box Sets Get Their Prices Lowered Further Anytime Soon?
This past year I found Seasons 1 & 2 of Voyager for sale at my Local Wally's for $14.99 each. I also found Season 1 of Enterprise on sale at Sam's Club for $16.99 and last month I found Season 3 of Voyager at Big Lots for $10.00. No Sign of the DS9 Sets that are supposedly "Bouncing Around" out there. The good news is Cheap Sets HAVE started to trickle in, so you'll just have to be patient and seek them out. Meantime I have about a year's worth of TREK Sets to chew on!

I was lucky enough to snag a DS9 complete series box for $150 on Amazon this time last year, and even luckier that it wasn't a bootleg. I'm still holding out for TNG, but that complete set looks cheap as hell and the individual seasons are still too pricey to justify buying anytime soon

Re: Will the Trek Series Box Sets Get Their Prices Lowered Further Anytime Soon?
I already own DS9 and TNG on dvd, but I would be hesitant, to say the least, on buying any of the season sets anywhere other than through Amazon themselves (not a third party) or another legitimate online retailer, or a brick & mortar store. I've seen (here and elsewhere) some really, really convincing counterfeit sets.
