Well, I'm sure there have always been larger receivers out there (the better ones, yeah?), but in my search for a new pup with HDMI features it seems most of them are well over 6'' in heighth. The shelves for my components can't fit anything taller than 5 7/8''. Can't adjust either (glass shelves... bought the thing cheap as a floor model a few years ago).

If you know of a good mid-priced receiver that is skinny, lay it on me! Or else I think I'll saw an inch into the bottom of one of the supports (1/5 of the support) to fit a new receiver. Ugly, but only seen by laying on the ground.

Isn't the JVC HDMI model like only 4" or so?

I'll have to check the JVC model again. At Amazon it says it's 6'' exactly, but it sure looks thinner in the photo.

Crutchfield lists the JVC RX-D412B at under four inches. That looks right (Amazon listed the specs wrong I think). I hate the idea of choosing a model based on it's size, but I'll have to look into this more. I was leaning towards the Onkyo 604.

edit: Eh, the JVC doesn't seem that appealing to me.

Me neither, and you are right, you shouldn't be choosing a model based on size.

My shortest one is over 7". Oh wait, receiver. Yeah, that too.

my expensive component rack ($600, 2 years ago) only supports 25lbs per shelf (glass shelves).

my new yamaha is almost 40lbs.

i had to sit it on the bottom shelf (wood). now all of my cables are the wrong length and i either have to use a remote or kneel on the floor.
