I really want to own Tintin, the animated series on DVD. The edition that has all the episodes, is only available in R2. For my current DVD players, all I have is a laptop and a PS2. I am wondering what is the cheapest Region Free DVD player I can get, so as to get Tintin in the near future.
Thanks for any help.

The Oppo is easily region free, and upconverting. I got mine for $160 shipped.
I am sure there are other region free players that can be found for less, but I don't know which ones those are.

The Philips 5960 is a cheaper alternative ($60-$80).

That sounds good. Is it worth it as a future investment? I assume there's a whole new of world of DVDs to experience beyond R1.

I'll answer that question this way... I recently bought an HD DVD player and then about two weeks later bought the Phillips 5960 and made it region free...
If you asked which made a bigger difference in my personal DVD experience, it is by-far the region free player. (Mainly because I'm a big fan of foreign and classic film)

Man, I'm seriously considering this now, that's a good repsonse. However, do I have to worry about PAL encoding when dealing with different regions?

There is a program you can run on your laptop that will enable region free operation. Shoot me a PM if you want to know more, since the program is primarily used to rip dvd's.
You can find it on www.afterdawn.com though.

You may want to check out the International Forum. This is what it is for. And dvdcompare.net.

www.videohelp.com has a database of DVD hacks (on left hand menu, under 'lists') that lists ways to turn off region coding.
Many, many players can be made region free with a simple code entered with the remote control, this is especially true of the cheaper, off-brand models.
The last few name brand players I bought I was able to make region free using codes on this site.

The Phillips 5960 does the PAL to NTSC conversion. From what I understand, some players are better than others with this, but from what I can tell, it does a pretty good job for the price.
I don't think there would be PAL issues on a laptop, but you'll have to ask the people who have actually made their laptop region free for info on that.
