The National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have put together a list of 200 albums that should be in every music collection. As NARM president Jim Donio puts it, they are "albums that have consistently excited record buyers over the years and those that have the potential for continued success based on enduring popularity.... i think alot of those albums seem to be on their due to the amount of copies they have sold, not the quality of the album (black album, hybrid theory, Human Clay.) And I am sorry, but I like Avril and her music and what not, but more essential then Rush's 2112, and the first Led Zeppelin album?? Also, no mention of the first sabbath album.

Also, I have never I mean NEVER understood the appeal of the black album. I mean, yeah it put metallica in the mainstream, but that album is almost a big fuck you to all of their earlier fans. I mean, I'll take even St. Anger over the Black Album.

I have 22 of them. I think Bad Company's debut should be on there somewhere. Alot of Led Zeppelin which is fine. AC/DC-Highway to Hell? I have this and I don't think it should be there. I think High Voltage is better for comparison.

I believe there are only 9 albums that are from the "country" genre on the entire list and 3 belong to the Chicks and surely, since the list was done before TTLW went 5 for 5 at the Grammys, it would have made the cut probably higher than Shania.


It could care less about lists, really, but the Chicks really do ROCK!

On my top 200, they'd occupy spots 1-4, but I could be a tad biased.

I get the feeling they just took a merchandisers' list and a critics' list, and put them together with no regard as to what would result from it. That's why you get things like a Creed album just ahead of The Clash. I imagine many of the rap and country albums were higher on the merchandisers' list but lower (if there at all) on the critics' list. Would critics really put a compilation like the Forrest Gump soundtrack on their lists?

It's weird to see The Phantom of the Opera: Highlights on there. I guess most are too cheap to spring for the complete recording like I did.

I agree this list doesn't make much sense but I do have 33 of the albums on the there. Glad to see a Tool album on there but in my opinion it should be Aenima instead of Lateralus.
