Bad News for DVD Buyers at Gamestop/EB Games/Babbage/EBX

Well people, according to several store managers in my area, Gamestop and all the related chains will stop selling DVDs, Blu-Ray discs and HD-DVDs at the end year. Because of this some chains haver already started to deny DVD, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD trade-ins.

It is really unfortunates, since at least 30 to 40% of my collection was purchased at these stores. At the same time, i feel is a bad move for them in a a business sense, since the almost gain over 100% profit by giving so little for trade and then selling the disc for at least double what they paid for.

My membership lapsed last month. With the price increases on their used product and eventual elimination of carrying movies, I don't envision visiting them much in the future as I'm not a gamer.

Wonder if someone else will come along as a replacement for used movies?

So what does this mean for Movie Stop locations in some markets?

I almost considered asking my local GS / EB locations to start referring people to me for sales / trades of DVDs, but I realized I don't want these crackheads coming into my store and stealing.

I'm with you, though my membership is good through the end of the year.

As far as replacements are concerned, believe it or not, I've been finding quite a few good deals at Suncoast lately, including this past weekend, when I picked up Boomtown: S1 for $9.00!!

This isn't going to help a lot of people, but I have a wonderful used store about 20 minutes from me. They carry DVD's, CD's, vinyl, video games, posters, toys...you name it.

I actually made out like a bandit a couple weeks ago.

More bad news to those who give trade-in to Gamestops; The stores that are having the buy 2 get 2 free are no longer accepting trade-ins for DVD, HD-DVD or Blu Ray discs.

I have a Babbages but you may as well call it GS.

This is ok, though, beside one of my local GS's is a wonderful Movie Stop. Only one in the state I think. As long as I can do 4 for 1 on reserves im good. I miss those 3 for 1 days though...

More prove that the end of DVD at Gamestop is for real:
http://www.gamestop.com/search.asp?No=12&N=80+132

gamestop.com use to have endless amounts of pages devoted to used dvd movies and now it's just 2 pages.

they are probably preparing to nationally launch the Movie Stop stores then. I gotta say, that place is a Godsend. the 10% off member card works there too.

I have always found this to be the case and the same 20 copies of the same 20 movies that are taken with columbia house memberships.

I have never found anything good at any of these stores.

Wow, dumb move on their part. The used DVD's is the only thing that brings me into their stores.

My situation, too. I never buy or rent games--zero interest in them. If they stop stocking used DVDs, I will have absolutely NO reason to shop in their stores, and my 10% discount card membership will be useless...

I don't think so... if they were launching more MovieStop stores, they'd need to increase their stock. By making B2G1F permanent and halting cash payments for DVDs, though, they're blowing out the stock that they would need to fill these new stores.

Most employees believe that this is the end of DVDs in the store. As someone that sells used DVDs for a living, I can tell you that the market is starting to dry up as the rent by mail systems get more popular. As a matter of fact, I noticed my business take a hit shortly after Blockbuster started their program of returning items to the store and grabbing your next rental while you're there.

Some are, some aren't.

The problem with a national company selling used material is that they can't be going through and constantly altering their prices and re-pricing product on the floor as the MSRP of a new version of the item drops.

To say all of their DVD's are overpriced is just wrong. I wouldn't call picking up a box set that sells for $50 new for $7.99 used "overpriced." Nor would I call picking up a DVD that was just released a day or two previously for about $11 overpriced when that movie is selling for $20 at Best Buy.

I've picked up $100 boxsets for just $3.00 each at Gamestop. I easily spend over $500 a year on their used DVDs.

I bought The Matador a week after relase for $8 in mint condition there, when everywhere else was selling it still for $20. There are some good prices to be found; generally when more "artsy" films show up. I laughed hard seing about a year or two ago The Seven Samurai Criterion for $10 used while the "flavor of the month" horror film was $15.

Count me in as one who has no reason to enter their stores now. They had some good deals such as Surface Season 1 for $12.99 and numerous others. They did piss me off a few times where I took everything and dropped it on their counter and left.

Too bad. Everything else there is a rip off. Oh well.

Meh...the service at mine is horrendous and half of the time I'll get something from the bin and it's 'myseteriously' disappeared from their disc cabinet. I won't miss them.

Well, it's official. As of last month, Gamestop no longe takes DVDs or Blu-Rays. The remaining inventory will be sold 70% off marked price. If you have the Edge Card you could get up to 90% off.

Good luck finding any now though. Word of this deal hit the major deal sites weeks ago, and most, if not all, were cleaned out.
