I think some of the games that may be easier to find in the US are harder to find in Canada.

Ahhh.... that changes things. :)

The only one on that list that is rare is Electroplankton. The rest are out of print, but aren't really that hard to find. I've been to two EBs for the current B2G1 used game sale, and have seen all of those titles other than Electroplankton. Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center were reprinted so many times that everyone who wants those should have them by now. I see Meteos pretty much everywhere.

Wario Ware Touched is another that is out of print, but isn't too hard to find.

I don't know why the situation is so different here up north. Other than being able to find Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center in a lot of the EBs now, all those discontinued games are near impossible to find anywhere. I remember finding some brand new copied of Electroplankton just before Christmas and quickly grabbing one (it was so shiny). Oh, and Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow. Almost every EB had used copies (with the original cover) recently. Go figure.

Whaa? I checked amazon.com and there's none directly available from them, the third-party vendors linked to from there are charging high prices, and the e-bay listings seem to have prices higher than what would be indicative of a game that is more or less available.

Where have you seen AWDS and at what price? I payed $24.99 CAD for it (used), so I hope I at least got a reasonable deal.

Has anyone picked up the browser yet?I will get my copy of the browser tomorrow afternoon (had to order it from to avoid tax and let the school pick up the tab). As soon as I get it, I'll play with it and post a review for you.

Any suggestions on the B2G1 that TRU is having in 2.5 weeks? I'm pretty sure that PPL and SimCity are definites for me, but I can't think of a third.

Etrain Odyssey and the Opera Browser are the only two that come to mind, but I'm not sure about either. I have enough browsers in the house already but one more never hurt and EO doesn't seem to review well but it sounds up my alley.

Anybody got any recommendations or "looking-forward-to"s that'll be out by that time?

You know, someone mentioned a while back that Advance Wars DS was hard to find... as I had gotten it at launch, I hadn't really noticed, but ever since then I haven't seen it on store shelves at Fry's, BB, CC, or Target. odd.

I'm having a hard time finding three games that I haven't gotten yet as well... probably should have waited on some of those DS games. Games that I've gotten fairly recently that I've enjoyed:

Castlevania
Custom Robo
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Puzzle Quest (is this any good multiplayer? should I pick up another?)

Games I'm thinking about:
Planet Puzzle League (definite)
Diddy Kong Racing
DS Browser
Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales
Hotel Dusk (doubt they'll have it)
Lunar Nights (probable)
Mario Hoops 3 on 3
Marvel Trading Card Game
Meteos Disney
Phoenix Wright 2
Transformers (2 versions, but haven't read anything about them yet)

I think Rune Factory: a Fantasy Harvest Moon comes out too late...

Maybe I'll get two copies of PPL for multiplayer

Does anyone know anything about Rune Factory? Is it actually just Harvest Moon kind of reskinned in a fantasy setting?

I'm looking at:

Planet Puzzle League
Puzzle Quest
Disney Meteos
Mario Kart
Sim City

^ I've got those middle 3 and I'd rank them PQ, MK, DM - if that's any use to you. I pretty much haven't played anything but PQ since it came out a few months ago.

For the TRU sale I'll pick up another Opera Browser for my wife, Planet Puzzle League and the New York Times Crossword Puzzle game. I just finished Puzzle Quest and I plan on buying it again when it hits the 360.

Okay, so I haven't been keeping up with the DS threads at all, but I did search every forum and individual DS threads for this answer, and found nothing. So if this is covered elsewhere, I apologize, just too much to sift through.

Okay, so I finally started playing Yoshi's Island DS again, and am now at 4-4, the Six-Face castle (something along those lines). Hmm.. I guess I'll use spoiler tags for this?

Well, when I get about past the area with the 3 balls you toss into the air, and then ride a lift past some bats over some lava, there is an area with a stork station and then the ceiling falls.
I can't seem to get past this at all! I thought baby mario just ran faster than the other baby's, but he doesn't. From what I find in my mini-guide and online, holding y makes him dash, but he won't do it. What am I doing wrong? Y seems to do nothing. Maybe it's broken. Glad I called in my warranty just a few days ago (it'll be a year on the 11th that I've had my lite, and it's had a dead pixel, and later developed a cracked hinge, and now, y seems to be broken, so glad I am sending it in!)
Any ideas?

How does the Opera Browser work? Do you have a cart in the top slot of the DS Lite and then something else plugged in the bottom or is it all on one cartridge?

FWIW, I don't believe either Meteos game has online play. If online is important at all, you should go with Tetris. I don't know if PPL will have online or not, I haven't kept up.

That is one thing that I was dissapointed in with Disney Meteos. It would have been a must buy if they had online play even though I have the first one. One of the best DS games. I think it is quite cheap at EB used. About $12-14.

Anyways, the browser is a little slow but l'm not expecting miracles rjght out of the gate.

I finally got Touch the Dead! I'm enjoying it so far, there seems to be a lot of strategy to the action in where you shoot zombies (arm, leg, head). So far, it's exactly what I was expecting and I gather it'll be a bit more the further I get into it.

Now if only I could get time away from FFVIa. ;)

Bought a few DS things today. I decided to go ahead and buy the browser. It is not perfect, but if you use mostly mobile sites it actually is fairly good for a mobile browser. Definitely a lot better than the ones I have tried on PDAs and phones. Takes some patience though on regular sites.

I also used a $5 coupon and picked up the Battleship, Connect Four, Sorry and Trouble DS cart at Best Buy for $14.99. The coolest thing I picked up was a Black Nerf DS Lite case. At first I wasn't sure I would like the added bulk, but it is a really nice case and the DS is very comfortable to hold inside the nerf case. I've been trying to find one in black for awhile so I'm glad I finally could get one. No way my DS gets damaged in that case.

For anybody that has sent in their DS for a cracked hinge:

What did you do about your DS WiFi settings? I don't have another DS to transfer the settings to, so do I just have to accept the fact that my friends lists will all be lost? The hinge just cracked last night, and it'll be a year since I bought it tomorrow. I know the crack is just cosmetic, but there are light scratches on the touch screen, so I figure I might as well send it in while I still can.

Now that I've beaten Final Fantasy VI into a pulp (both bonus dungeons, including the hidden extra super boss, a godly item list that you'd think would require an Action Replay for, level 99 on all characters, etc.) I'm moving on to Final Fantasy III. My experience with the NES version was brief, but I'm already digging the changed up elements while retaining the basic structure of the original. I really HATE the character designs though.. so I hope they stick to Amano's designs for Final Fantasy IV DS (and any remakes past that).

I'm really far into III, but, stopped playing and just am not feeling the urge to jump back in.

On a side DS note, my wife admitted to me that she was thisclose to impulse buying herself a DS. She just can't seem to quite justify it. She mentioned the time constraint, etc. I told her, 'Heck, even if you don't get a chance much to play, we'll then have 3 in the house for multi-player if nothing else..' I'm working on her, we'll see what happens. One way or another, she'll have one by the end of the year.

Any reviews for SimCity DS?
Interested too since I'll be getting this at the TRU B2G1 next Sunday along with Planet Puzzle League and...?

Edit - Metacritic shows it at 67 out of 4 reviews (81, 81, 63, 50). http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ds/simcityds

Complaints seem minor to me.

EGM game SimCity DS 6.5, 6.5, 6.0.

Main complaint is that the DS screens are so small, so it's hard to see the details in buildings etc, and the controls can be touchy for the same reason, as well as the camera having some issues.

Basic summary would be that it's a solid version of SimCity, but hampered by being on the DS.

Continuing my obsession with CCG on the DS it looks like the IGN preview of the Fullmetal Alchemist CCG sounded pretty good.

I know nothing of the anime or the tabletop game but they said it was pretty fun and much more complex than the current games out there - much closer to Magic:TG.

Thank you for posting the SimCity DS review scores. I believe that the complaints about the size of the screen, lack of details and problems with the controls and camera are valid concerns. I may pass this game for the DS.

Clubhouse games. It has like 42 games.

Card games: Old Maid, Spit, I Doubt It, Sevens, Memory, Pig, Blackjack, Hearts, President, Rummy, Seven Bridge, Last Card, Last Card Plus, Five Card Draw, Texas hold 'em, Nap, Spades and Contract Bridge.

Board games: Chinese checkers, Checkers, Dots and Boxes, Hasami shogi, Turncoat, Connect Five, Grid Attack, Backgammon, Chess, Shogi, Field Tactics and Ludo.

Variety games: Soda Shake, Dominoes, Koi-Koi and Word Balloon.

Action games: Bowling, Darts, Billiards, Balance and Takeover.

Single player games: Solitaire, Escape and Mahjong solitaire.

btw, all games are single player (in that you can play by yourself), but you just play against computer oponents. The list of "Single player games" are just games where there are no oponents.

Contra 4 announced for the DS.
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – June 20, 2007 – Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc., today announced Contra 4 (working title) for the Nintendo DS™. Marking the 20th anniversary of the quintessential action franchise, the game pushes 2D side-scrolling action in an all-new direction with gunplay that spans two full screens, original gameplay mechanics that grant players deadlier abilities than ever before, and frantic multiplayer functionality.

Contra 4 takes place two years after the events of Contra III: The Alien Wars. After saving earth from invasion by Red Falcon, Bill Rizer and Lance Bean are confronted with a new extraterrestrial menace: the terrifying Black Viper. Joined by hard-boiled mercenaries Mad Dog and Scorpion, the warriors must once again wage war against an entire army of invaders.

Refining the 2D side-scrolling genre the series established 20 years ago, Contra 4 delivers pure action at a fever pitch as players jump, shoot, and dodge oncoming hazards. Utilizing a new dual screen presentation, the action spans both screens of the Nintendo DS, giving players the opportunity to battle across expansive environments in which death can come from any direction. The use of both screens for the game’s core action also allows for massive boss battles as players try to seek and destroy the weak points of sky-high enemies. A first for the series, Contra 4 introduces a grappling hook accessory that lets players grab onto elements of the environment directly above them. Whether using it to avoid oncoming dangers or attack from a strategic vantage point, the grappling hook allows for new combat situations and dramatic set pieces that underscore the game’s adrenaline-soaked pedigree.

Continuing the multiplayer tradition of previous games in the series, Contra 4 lets two players battle together against Black Viper’s army of vile alien forces and reclaim Earth for mankind.

Developed by WayForward Technologies, Contra 4 is planned for release on the Nintendo DS in 2007. For more information on the game and the Contra franchise, please visit: www.konami.com .

Alright folks... I need some help. I want to get in on the TRU deal, B2G1 free on DS games next week. I can think of three or four I want, but they are all puzzle games. I'd like to get something else for my third title and was considering Pokemon. I've heard great things about it, but I've never touched a Pokemon game in my life and know literally nothing about the franchise.

Anyone want to sell me on it? Or give me a crash course on it?

KurrptSenate
06-20-07, 01:02 PM
I could easily sell you on it

If you aren't familiar with pokemon, at all, it's an RPG where you're a human and you go around catching animals that do all the battleing for you. Each animal is of a certain TYPE (water, fire, earth/rock, physic, ghost, leaf, etc). Each type has it's strengths and weaknesses towards other types.

One of the big appeals for this game is it's vast amount of playable characters, which happens to include every incarnation of pokemon, except its original game boy color couter parts

The online aspect is definitely nice, allowing you to battle friends, or trade pokemon with people around the world

Game play is usually in the 25-40 hour range, and can get well beyond that if you really wanna "catch them all"

shumway
06-20-07, 01:06 PM
I tried it w/ Sapphire, being a big fan of JRPGs, and loved it enough to play more than 180 hours.

You can make it as basic or as indepth as you want as far as the building up of your Pokemon's stats, etc. You can just play through to beat it, or, you can try to catch as many as possible, etc. With the online battles, I can't see a reason to avoid it at this point.

KurrptSenate
06-20-07, 01:08 PM
yea, I mean, keep in mind that they are trying to appeal to a younger audience. Some may or may not be driven away by that, but, it's pretty obvious to see the difference in intellect when actually playing a match with someone

memorizing what trumps what definitely helps

Hmmm... thanks for the input kurrpt and shumway. I've never been big on true RPGs. Do you think I would still enjoy it if I enjoy RPG-lites along the lines of Zelda or the Metroidvanias? I loved Viva Pinata, not sure what genre that would fit in, but I don't mind the leveling aspect of games, I've just never gotten into true RPGs. I think the last one I played was Dragon Warrior on the NES.

Josh H
06-20-07, 02:34 PM
Metroidvania has very little RPG to it.

You just level up as you kill crap, and just equip different weapons/armor based on which gives you the highest attack and defense skills.

Zelda doesn't even have that. You don't level at all, other than getting more life as you beat bosses.

You get new items, but those are mostly used in puzzles rather than combat etc.

Michael Corvin
06-20-07, 02:43 PM
I lied, I loved the original Bard's Tale. That was probably the last RPG I played. :)

It's easy enough that my then 6 year old son could play it, get the hang of it and, enjoy it. They are definitely not the most difficult, and, as I stated, you can play them very simple, or, make them very complex. If you are looking for a reason to try an RPG again, go for it. Besides, if you absolutely hate it, they tend to keep their resale value.

I would say this B2G1 sale is a good time to take a chance on maybe Pokemon and one of the Metroidvania games since it's just $20 a pop and you could sell them for that or more if you don't like them probably.

Metroidvania's may be tougher since Amazon, BB etc. had them for $10 on clearance a while back.

Exactly why I was thinking about giving Pokemon a try. Good to hear about resale value. I've got all the Castlevanias... well just sold PoR, but have every other portable on the GBA/DS.

I'll probably go with Planet Puzzle League, Pokemon and Puzzle Quest.

So is there a big difference between Diamond or Pearl?

I've had the game for awhile now and they have only added two packs (15 total puzzles) from Mario Picross. Maybe when the US version hits they will increase this because they are supposed to also add puzzles from Super Mario Picross.

I will say that the main game is loaded with puzzles. I'm working on the level 10 normal puzzles right now and they are all space related and very cool and very big 20X25 grids.

I've put a little time into. I was never a huge fan of the series but figured I'd give it a try. What they said about the controls is spot on. The biggest problem comes when your trying to demolish areas. I ended up breaking down buildings that I didn't want to. They show the grid at a weird angle so you'll end up selecting the wrong box by mistake a lot. Other than that, it seems to have everything in there. If you're a big fan I'd say try it out. Otherwise it doesn't add anything new to bring in people who didn't like the others.

He doesn't have to be referencing anything. I couldn't see an action game like Contra being worth a damn with the stylus controls.

Though I have to admit, despite high reviews in Japan, I'm a bit wary of a stylus controlled Zelda. But I can see it more for that than a twitch action game.

But I've also only liked the Stylus controls in games where they make natural sense--i.e. puzzle games, brain age, club house games etc. And hated them for the most part when used in stuff like Metroid, the seals in Castlevania: DoS etc.

Stylus controls can enhance some games, but don't force them in old games where traditional controls are more than good enough. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I really haven't put too much time into it, plus I was never a big fan of the sim games so my view may be a bit biased. If you like the game I don't think the controls are bad enough to make you not want to play it. They are manageable. Just take your time when you're using the grid. And if you demolish something by mistake it can't be undone. You have to spend the money to rebuild it. The game has the standard city building mode along with a good amount of disaster scenarios to play though.

And for the talk on Zelda, I imported it and the controls are fine. The only movement I can't do every time is the roll. I actually find it really easy to control. Trying to understand what I should be doing when I don't understand Japanese is the hard part. Loving it so far.

I'm renting it. I think the controls are fine. Its been a long time since i've played a Sim City game, but my only major complaint is that the small screen makes it a little less fun than the computer version, but I was playing it for awhile yesterday (couple hours) and was having fun and the controls didn't bug me a bit. Most things (other than demolision) can be undone, so if you do accidentally mis-lay a road, it's an easy fix.

It seems like it's pretty much a port of SC3000 with some DS functionality. It's pretty full-featured. I'm not sure I want it for $30, but I think I'll definately pick it up on sale.

Consensus on the DS Yoshi was that it was good, just shy of great, but, the dead zone between the screens almost killed it for many. Nice of them to include enemies, or, traps, etc, where you couldn't see them.

The press release we saw the other day listed 4 characters, but only stated 2 player. 4 player would be nice but it looks cramped. I'd expect 2 over wifi at most.
The latest NP does say that this will have 4-player local and wifi multiplayer. Who do we believe? The NP that went to press weeks ago or the Konami PR that came out just a few days ago?

Not sure this has been talked about, but I read this this morning:

TINGLE RPG Dated For Europe

http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/1261/tinglecovervh4.jpg

Freshly Picked - Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland

Sorry about the caps, I'm just a little surprised/excited. The Nintendo Europe release schedule popped up last night, and while it contained the expected September release date for Super Paper Mario (September 14), it also showed Tingle RPG. Which was only about the last game I ever expected to get a Western release. Best part? It's new Western name: Freshly Picked - Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland.

Expect it on September 14 also. No word on an American release (potential compensation for the Super Paper Mario delay?), but that doesn't matter. It's the DS. So long as it's in English, everyone's happy. -- Luke Plunkett

So it looks like there will be an english language version of the game.

Here's the Official Nintendo Magazine review (they gave it a 76%):

Thinking about picking up the official DS headset/mic. Mainly because I can get it for $6.99 CAD. But I don't really use the wi-fi capabilities (no wi-fi access), so the mic part of it would only come in handy with games that use voice recognition. At that price, do you guys think it is still worth it? Or is the headset pretty much complete junk (due to its monaural sound as well)?

What is the attraction? Tingle has to be the single worst character in the entire Zelda franchise if not entire Nintendo library. I don't get it.I disagree.. Tingle is the anti-thesis to the wannabe-preteen-badass image of today's video game characters (see: The Darkness). He's so brazenly bizarre that he's extremely enjoyable in a stange way. Of course, the American response is usually "OMG he's gay, I'm gonna catch it if I play the game he's in!" To each their own, but the game itself look extremely fun so I'm glad it's coming out in English at all.

It is an excellent 1up show. Contra 4 and Zelda Phantom Hourglass look amazing and Geometry Wars Galaxies looks pretty cool as well.

It's true that the DS Browser is slow in loading up image heavy sites. Plus the lack of flash/java support sucks. But I found some mobile sites that work great on the browser. They all load fast and make surfing and checking email with the DS Browser very enjoyable.

Nintendo NA has officially announced Phantom Hourglass for an Oct 1st release date.
REDMOND, Wash., July 2, 2007 – What do you get when you combine the world's best-selling video game system, the Nintendo DS™, with one of Nintendo's best-loved franchises, Zelda? An epic new adventure that satisfies longtime fans but draws in new players with intuitive touch-screen controls. Launching Oct. 1, The Legend of Zelda®: Phantom Hourglass, complete with crisp 3-D cartoon graphics and multiplayer battles over Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection, marks the debut of the franchise on Nintendo DS™.

"Since 1987 The Legend of Zelda franchise has sold more than 52 million units worldwide," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass stays true to the richness of the console Zelda franchise while introducing new controls that allow veterans and first-time gamers to become fully immersed in the adventure."

The game involves legendary hero Link and Tetra, the leader of a band of pirates, as they discover a ghost ship in dense fog. Link falls into the ocean when Tetra gets into trouble, and he wakes up alone on the shore of a mysterious island. Throughout the game, Link collects sand for his Phantom Hourglass, which allows him to explore deeper and deeper into a time-limited dungeon in his quest to find Tetra.

You can play the entire game with only the Nintendo DS touch screen. Walk up to characters and tap them to start a conversation. Slash your stylus across the touch screen to swing Link's sword. If players touch an enemy with the stylus, Link attacks. Players can even navigate their ship or set a route for their boomerang simply by drawing a path on the touch screen.

The robust single-player adventure will have Zelda veterans and newcomers alike engrossed by the story as they move through the game with the stylus. A special two-player battle mode lets players connect locally or via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. One player controls Link as he tries to gather as many Force Gems as possible, while the other player manages the enemies who pursue Link. The replayability of these winner-take-all matches is virtually endless.

In both style and characters, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass echoes the smash-hit The Legend of Zelda®: The Wind Waker™ for Nintendo GameCube™, which sold more than 2.2 million in the United States alone. But the inviting, easy-to-understand story and ease of control will attract casual and younger players who might be new to Zelda games.

As a special bonus for Nintendo's rewards club, My Nintendo members who register the game and their Nintendo DS hardware at MyNintendo.com and fill out a short survey will receive a special Nintendo DS stylus that looks like an old-fashioned quill pen, modeled after an item in the game (subject to availability).

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass follows hot on the heels of another classic Nintendo franchise with amazing new controls. Metroid® Prime 3: Corruption, the third installment of the hit trilogy, launches with motion-sensitive controls exclusively on Wii™ on Aug. 27. For more information about these games, visit www.Nintendo.com.
Get it early and register it fast!

Just wanted to make a quick recommendation for a game that might otherwise fly under the radar. I picked up Nervous Brickdown yesterday and I'm really enjoying it. It's a Breakout clone that's actually good. What makes it interesting is that there are 10 worlds, each of which has a twist. There are 9 levels plus a boss level per world, and some of the twists are really cool. In one world, you have a breakout game taking place on the touchscreen while a sidescrolling game happens on the top screen. You play the breakout game with the stylus and you have to occasionally tap up on the D-pad to make the sidescrolling character jump over obstacles. In another world, your paddle is a submarine, and the playfield contains see-saw platforms with stick figure characters on them. You have to knock the ball into the platforms to tip them to one side, and when the stick figures fall off the platforms, you catch them with the submarine to save them. The presentation is slick and it controls well. For some reason there aren't many reviews, but here's a good one from IGN:

http://ds.ign.com/articles/800/800802p1.html

Unfortunately, it's $30, but I'd still recommend it if you enjoy the classic breakout gameplay and are looking for something new in the genre.

My launch Lite had a hinge crack. I didn't really like it, but it didn't bother me enough for me to do anything about it. A few months ago, however, it starting shutting off randomly, which was quite annoying. They have a really good system for their warranty stuff, though. Mailed a new one and I used the box and the label they gave me to mail the old one back.

Only problem was the new one had a couple stuck pixels. I called them about it after a few weeks, and they said that it was within manufacturer's specs, but would replace it anyway. For that replacement, however, I had to mail that one back before they sent the new one. Third one was the charm, I guess. It was nice to get a new screen without any scratches, as well :)

This NEEDS to be a single-card four player game to work, in my opinion.

That is a shit ton of games coming out, the operative word being shit. Unfortunately Zelda remains the ONLY one that is a must buy for me. Beyond that the Vision Training sounds interesting. Might be worth a $15 BB purchase.

I really hope LucasArts/Traveller's Tales fixes all the bugs from the previous installments when they release LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga. If they do, I'll buy it in a flash.

Anyone plan on picking up Glory Days 2? It looks like it may be a decent side-scrolling shooter/RTS type game.

How about Nervous Brickdown? Has anyone tried that one yet?

I'm itching to spend some of the gift cards I have saved up, while still retaining enough of the balance to pick up Phantom Hourglass, Phoenix Wright 3, Contra IV, and Jam Sessions in the Fall.
