Unable to find existing video distributors interested in purchasing small art films, Kino established its own label, Kino On Video, in 1987. Our first release, Mark Whitney's tapestry-like documentary on C.J. Jung, Matter Of Heart, was an immediate success, and set our new venture into video distribution off and running.
Kino on Video has grown substantially since that first release. It not only disseminates contemporary world cinema to communities and institutions which might not otherwise have access to those films, but also provides new life to many classic films which were not previously available to the public outside of a few big cities. Kino on Video has contributed significantly to the resurrection and distribution of films from the silent era, which are often prohibitively expensive to restore on film, but can be economically and beautifully preserved with new video and digital technologies.
Kino on Video issued its first series of silent films, "They Had Faces Then", in 1989. This ten title series included Erich Von Stroheim's Queen Kelly, The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari and The Phantom Of The Opera. It was a smashing success, and filled a void by providing quality restorations of films from the silent period to the home and institutional collector. Since then we have released over 130 silent films on video, many through our rewarding association with Film Preservation Associates, headed by film historian David Shepard.
Among the highlights of Kino's silent catalogue are the five-part series "The Movies Begin", consisting of 122 films made between 1894 and 1914, the ten-part series "The Art Of Buster Keaton", released in 1995 and winner of Entertainment Weekly Magazine's "Best Video of the Year" award, "The Slapstick Encyclopedia", and more recently, the 1924 version of Peter Pan.
In 1999, Kino issued its first DVD release and today has more than two hundred and fifty titles available in that popular format. Some notable Kino DVD releases include: "The Art of Buster Keaton" collection, the restored version of METROPOLIS, and the complete 14-film "American Film Theatre" series. One hundred additional titles are available on VHS only.
Kino now boasts a catalog of one of the most important libraries of classic and contemporary world cinema titles available to the home video collector -- and the critics agree! In 2002 and in 2003 Kino on Video won the prestigious Heritage Award from the National Society of Film Critics for its work in film preservation.

Yeah, last year I got the Film Noir: The Dark Side of Hollywood set right after it became available, and it's fantastic. I wish I'd waited for a sale, but it was worth whatever I paid for it. The Penalty is another great Kino release, and stars Lon Chaney before he made Hunchback and Phantom...even if you don't like silent movies, you may still like this one because it's so unusual.
I've always liked Kino, they really try to find things no one else is releasing, and do a good job on the transfers too.

The Keaton set is a steal at under $100. Also "Staker" is a fantastic film if you enjoy slow contiplative movies with interesting images.

even some of the fukasaku are not your thing I wouldn't think many would consider them slow or boring. or the miike stuff for that matter.
I will be picking up "I was an S+M writer" "Tokyo Trash Baby" and "Brother" I would have picked up "Vibrator" if it wasn't for the superb Korean import with the soundtrack. I have to wait until the 9th probably.

A better transfer of Fallen Angels was just released actually, in a set with Chungking Express.

More than six months ago a massive boxset containing some of Michael Haneke's early films (including the now notorious Benny's Video) was released in France but unfortunately for those needing English subs the collection did not offer such. Shortly after KINO Video announced their plans to release the same films in R1 land. So, what I have in my hands is the first disc of the collection and I have to (regretfully) announce that this is indeed a direct, improperly converted, copy of the French release with added English subtitles. The transfers from the boxset for all of the Haneke upcoming R1 releases (which I will have reviews for shortly) are identical to the French versions which is not necessarily a bad thing, quite the opposite in fact, but in a well familiar fashion KINO have simply performed a direct PAL-NTSC port of Funny Games and as a result there is a good dose of "ghosting" to be seen. Aside from that from color gradation to contrast everything else in this release appears exactly the same as the French version of Funny Games. The print herein provided is in very good condition and there is simply no basis for comparison between the old Koch Lorber disc and this new French-ported version. Unfortunately no matter how good it looks it still remains a PAL-NTSC port and all of the issues that come with such a transfer are quite visibly represented here. Funny Games is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 and enhanced for widescreen TV's.

While the film's print is largely in a very good condition and the original source must have been quite satisfying this also appears to be a PAL-NTSC port. This it quite a disappointing occurrence to say the least but indeed an expected one! Ignoring the fact that Benny's Video is a PAL-port everything else in this presentation is rather well handled - contrast appears at a satisfactory level, detail is quite good considering how the film was shot, and colors appear rather acceptable. However, it has to be noted that a direct comparison between the French release and this R1 release indicates that the colors appear slightly less vivid which I am willing to accept is a product of the actual format conversion. Indeed, I am quite disappointed as this could have been a must better release that we at DVDTALK should have been able to recommend to viewers as Kino's disc is indeed the only English-friendly version of Haneke's film at this point.

My Tarkovsky collection is woefully underdeveloped, so I'm strongly considering "Stalker"... Any opinions on the DVD?
"Asphalt", "It", "The Man Who Laughs", "The House By the River", "Mother and Son", and "Scarlet Street" are also looking quite tempting.
I highly recommend "The Return" for anyone who's a fan of Russian cinema.

I think Stalker is pretty great. I've seen it twice, and I just ordered it as part of this sale, in fact. I find that it held up well upon my second viewing and stays with you long after you see it.
It's haunting and strange, and despite its gloomy overtones, it is a very beautiful film. I should warn you, however, it makes Solaris seem fast paced by comparison.

House by the River is a decent gothic-noir, but not one of Lang's best. Scarlet Street, on the other hand, is. Maybe Lang's best American film, and one of the top five noirs.

The Mirror is very dense, complicated stuff, but really pretty amazing. One of the most personal of Tarkovsky films, and it works on lots of different levels.
As far as this current Kino sale goes, though, the Ruskie film I'm really jonesing for -- and that I wish DVDPlanet would hurry up and list -- is QUIET FLOWS THE DON...

I finally ordered the set as well. Even though the picture indicated the fat-cased set, I figured it was just an old picture. I haven't seen the fatties in stores for awhile (at least the ones with any type of turnover). Either way, great deal with GCO. I wouldn't turn it down based on girth.
I'd definitely recommend Stalker. My favorite of Tarkovsky. I have a disc I bought from Ruscico a few years ago. The transfer has some minor issues (nothing that makes it unwatchable), but I was just glad to have it (and at a much higher price too!). I don't know if the Kino disc is the same. The cover is certainly identical. Can't go wrong with Stalker.

Stalker is a great film, but yes the DVD has some major issues with regards to its mastering onto DVD. I sold my region 1 and bought the region 2, but it still has the same problems....objects in the picture seem to be swimming around whenever the camera moves.

There is also German Horror Classics: Nosferatu/ Dr. Caligari/ The Golem/ Waxworks from KINO which is selling for around $35. It is normally $10-15 more than that. I got that set because I want a good copy of the first two movies and would not mind seeing the latter two. The KINO may not be the best, but it is one of the better versions of Nosferatu from my research. (I got mine from DVDPlanet, not DD)
I remember from the last sale I picked up 3 boxsets and some singles, and this was right after the 20% off sale which I kind of hurt. I picked up the Miike film trilogy boxset (Dead or Alive Trilogy), the Fritz Lang Epic Collection boxset, and the German Horror boxset. It's definitely worth it to go after the boxsets because they generally will have what you want or are after plus a one or two other films that will still be cheap. That's the reason I got the German Horror set. I wanted Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and so at that price point it was a no brain just to pay up a bit for the set. Same thing with the Fritz Lang box set (probably their best boxset ever) in which it had Die Nebullung, Woman in the Moon, and the classic Metropolis which most will just buy the single of.

BTW- DVDCompare has some pretty negative things about Kino's transfers. Fritz Lang's Spies, for example, is much better in it's Region2 Eureka counterpart.

What bugs me about Kino is it's not like the situation where they are doing their best with the source material, but they have a great source material and do a less than stellar transfer.
I know a lot of people can't hande Region2/pal discs, but with a coupon I'm getting the R2 version from CD WOW for only $1 more than Kino's. If you can only play region 1, then Kino is certainly acceptable (I have some of their other releases).

I want to support Kino because I believe in the kind of movies they promote, but when I read the reviews it is disappointing. I know that it is difficult for Kino who is going against the traditional blockbuster-movie crowd, but if they paid more attention to the quality of their DVD's I would spend lots and lots of cash. I just wish there was some way we could get thru to them.

The Douglas Fairbanks collections is excellent.
The Kiewloski collection is not bad, but not great. For the price it is worth it, unless you want to spring for the more expensive region 2 editions. I'm watching on a 32" CRT tube, and I think it is fine.

I too was thinking about getting the Cabrol set, but after reading the reviews at DVDTalk, only 2 of the films have good transfers, "Color of Lies" and "Cop Au Vin", the other films suffer from improper conversions. Too bad.

Kino's Glamour Girls collection is a very good deal. It would have been a great deal if they had included the German-language version of The Blue Angel. (The box set only contains the English-language version, while the individual release is a two-disc set with both.)

I recently bought the Harold Lloyd set at Costco for $40. Now I caved and bought the Art of Buster Keaton because, frankly, no other site offers a price within 60 bucks of this and now I'll have completed my silent comedy trio. I was hoping they would out of stock until my next credit card bill was sent. :) Unfortunately, or fortunately, I might add, it was sent today. Did anyone else get this recently? How does it rank in comparison to the Chaplin and LLoyd collections quality wise?

I ordered a single DVD on the 12th, and I'm still waiting for it. I called and they said I should have it by the 29th. It seems like the more DVDs you order, the faster it gets to you though. That's how it's always been for me. When you buy just one DVD, it can take a while to show up.

When I called them about my order today, I was asking about that tracking number. They refused to believe that I was telling the truth, and kept telling me that there is not a tracking number listed on the page with my order, and I of course kept telling them that I was looking right at it. They just said that there isn't a tracking number for media mail at all, and that I wasn't actually seeing a tracking number.

I know that there isn't supposed to be a tracking number, but I clearly saw something that said "TRACKING NUMBER: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX". The fact that they refused to believe that I was looking right at that is what really ticked me off.

On single DVD, especially cheap sale item, free shipping means media mail and takes about three weeks. Also, I often get a tracking number on this kind of shipping from many etailers which appears to be used for delivery-confirmation purpose, i.e. it gets scanned and posted only after it is delivered to your mailbox but not while it is in transit.

Apparently I wont be using DVDPlanet again either. I placed an order on Tuesday night (The Naked City Criterion and Michael Shayne: Private Detective Vol 1), and paid for 2nd day shipping. It states on their website that orders placed by 10:30AM will ship out the same day, so my order definitely should have gone out Wednesday. I ofcourse only paid for 2nd day because it would get to me then on Friday, before the weekend. I called today and they said it didn't ship out today and that orders take 24 hours to process. I said "why would you say things ship out the same day as order if they take 24 hours to process." i told her i only paid extra for shipping because i wanted it before the weekend. She offered to refund my shipping.
Will there ever be a good low priced online dvd store?

Which is why you should never bother with expedited shipping. This kind of situation is not uncommon and certainly not unexpected. That's the nature of online shopping. Get economy shipping, pay less, save yourself the aggravation.
I see the issue here--you're not getting the service you paid for. That's not right. But at the same time, I'm always mildly amused when I see the "oh no, it's been a week and my order is not here yet--I will never shop at *** again" tantrum. Seriously, is that movie going to get any worse if you wait a little longer? It's 60 years old, it's not like the novelty will wear off by next week. And if you're really that desperate to get it RIGHT NOW, get it at BestBuy...

I know that second part isn't directed at me, but I wish I had gotten it at Best Buy. Unfortunately when I placed an order for instore pickup on Tuesday to get Michael Shayne: Private Detective at Best Buy, I was told (after not receiving any response to my order after 3 hours and then calling in) that it turned out they didn't have it. I wanted these movies before the weekend because the weekend is when I have the time to relax and watch movies. Now I wont have any (unless by some miracle the ones I ordered from DDD come in) new ones to watch.

Actually returns take longer because DDD has to receive returned merchandise before they will ship out a replacement, but first you have to contact them and ask for a return label with a return authorization number. Once they get the set back they ship out a replacement. The few times I had to do exchanges with DDD it took over three weeks to get through the process and get my replacements.
