I just looked in my wishlist and all the Criterions are at 23.97 or 17.97. Don't see any banner about a sale so I'm not sure if this is a sale or new lower prices.

At Dvdplanet my order came to 82.71 after using the -7.00 off code and

It deservedly has a nice cult following, but it's not everyone's cup of tea.
Do you like Slacker, Tapeheads, Withnail & I, movies by Whit Stillman, Eric Schaeffer, Wes Anderson, and Hal Hartley (not to mention The Squid and the Whale and Mr. Jealously if you've seen them)? If so, it's at least a must-rent. If not, you probably want to skip it.

It's interesting that DVDPlanet coupon scales are opposite of most stores. Others structure coupons to encourage larger purchases, but here the $5 off $50 is the greatest percentage off. I know, it's not a big enough savings to put too much mental energy into trying to put everything into $50 combinations (which doesn't work well with $24 Criterions), but it's just an observation.

Since this thread seems to be talking about two different online shops, I'm not sure which one you're talking about. I only have experience with DeepDiscount, but I know they ship items as they become available. So, everything that isn't back ordered should ship right away. It's also important to know that they don't charge your account until an item ships, so the back ordered item will not show up on your bill until they ship it out.

I didn't have a problem with the transfer, but then again my tv is kinda old so that might be a factor. I agree that there's a chance of a re-release but nothing's been even hinted at for Bergman stuff unfortunately. I'd say if you're a huge fan and can get it for a good price, get it now and double dip if you have to. If you're just a casual fan of Bergman and want the film simply as an item that was recommended to you, rent it for now and wait to see if it gets re-released in the future. It's not like there won't be other Criterion sales later on, afterall.

I feel as though the transfer is pretty good. Included in the supplements is one of Criterion's restoration demonstrations. To see the work that was already done to fix the film makes the transfer even more impressive for me. I also hope that they rerelease this in the future, but I think it is already worth it for the current price. Then again, this is one of my favoritre films, so I am a bit biased.

I'm still new with dealing with Criterions. It seems they rerelease a lot of the their titles. Is it usually just a repackaging? I was wondering if any of these titles were going to receive the rerelease treatment soon since they seem to be a few years old: Rashomon, Hidden Fortress and Life of Brian.
Anyways, I ordered Yojimbo/Sanjuro, Brazil and Ran.

No, it's never just a repackaging as they're geared towards the collector, librarian, etc. The differences are usually an improved transfer/remastering and additional special features.
mifuneral
03-07-07, 08:00 PM
I wouldn't say they're *never* just a repackaging as I think that's what 400 Blows was. However, it's almost always more than a repackaging.
ElCambio
03-07-07, 08:59 PM
The 400 Blows got a new anamorphic transfer and new extras including newsreel footage, audition footage, and some television interviews with Truffaut. You're right, though, that there are very rare exceptions of Criterion re-releases that don't offer anything new. The only two I can think of at the moment were M. Hulot's Holiday and Mon Oncle, and this was because they regained the rights to them, the transfers couldn't have been significantly improved upon, and they didn't have any new features at hand to add to them.

What I believe this refers to is the tendency of Criterion to reissue a title in a new "edition". In those cases it seems there are always improvements of one sort or another over the original CC edition. Seven Samurai, Amarcord, M, The Wages Of Fear, Playtime and the new The Third Man are the examples I can think of.

(Beauty and the Beast, The 400 Blows, Yojimbo, and Sanjuro were all given the full upgrade treatment;Charade and Brazil were all given anamorphic enhanced updates with no other changes. That's all I can remember beyond what you've posted)
That's what he means to refer to I think; I don't really see how anybody can complain about those titles though. I mean, they're reissuing some of the first dvds they ever released, what company hasn't done that? But instead of just minimally upgrading the transfer or throwing on a pointless title to try and sell it, they completely recreate the entire package to give it a substantially increased value. I mean, look at how extensive the Seven Samurai reissue alone is. Not only is the transfer lightyears better, but every single aspect of the bonus material is unequaled in it's attention to detail.
I doubt they'll reissue The Seventh Seal, but seeing as it's one of my favorites, I'm praying they do. I can only dream of how great that would be.
Anyway, back on topic...
I used the GC bonus to grab Rififi and Beauty and the Beast for around $31. I'm thinking I'll do one more order, probably grab the Monsters and Madmen set, that seems like a lot of fun. But I don't know, Fires on the Plain and Mouchette are tempting as well.

I don't need any of these titles immediately, so I was wondering if anyone knew if the typical 20% off sale at DD will be better than the current sale prices offered by either DD or DVDPlanet? I think DD sometimes fiddles with prices during the 20% off sale, but those prices might still be better with that coupon. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

The 20 percent sale is off dd regular price. This dvdplanet sale is better if you use coupon.

DVDPlanet also ran a 20% off sale last year. I wonder if they will repeat that promotion.

Problem with that is, I don't remember them having ever done that before. I'm betting you can't count on DVDPlanet 20% off.
I still don't know if DD is better now or better at the 20% off sale.

Almost 2 weeks in the sale and there is no sign of the Third Man. I believe they are going to list it as soon as the sale is over.
Edit: well damn! it is now listed at dvdplanet, but only at 35% off. Damn!

Preorders were only included at DVD Planet early on due to, I believe, a mistake. They wouldn't normally be covered by these sales at Deep Discount, either.

I know that at DD it will charge you the sale price when it returns to stock. I don't know the answer for DVDPlanet, since I have never bought anything from there. I would like to know how DVDP runs those types of things since I am thinking of going with them because of the coupons.
BTW, are there any happy customer stories from DVDP? Anytime there is a sale with online merchants people crap all over the companies. Like I said, I'm thinking about ordering from them, but it'd be nice to hear something postive. Thanks.

DVDPlanet will charge you the sale price at the time you placed the order when they ship the out of stock titles. I love DVDPlanet and in the very rare instance of a problem like a missing shipment or wrong title sent, their customer service has been top notch in my experience.

I'm sorry to repeat myself but I want to understand as clear as possible because I will be spending over *gulp* $200 with an UPS delivery. I won't be overcharged with Criterion discs if I order at the time of sale even though they are "temp. out of stock?"
Thanks in advance.

I picked up M. Hulot's Holiday and Monsters & Madmen on one order, and that pushed my frequent buyer points over 1000. So when that shipped, I placed an order for the Robeson box for only $20 out of pocket.
I sent in a bunch of dvds for credit last year around this time, and just now finished using it all up, buying 2-4 Criterions a month (making use of their "best" coupon). I've already made up a quote for another bunch of titles to get rid of, which should bring me another ~$500 in credit as well.

Has the sale also been extended to 3/22 on DVDplanet to compete with DDD? I know it's still being advertised on their site right now, but I don't see an ending date anywhere like on DDD.

Hard to believe what DVDPlanet puts on their site. I mean it says that orders placed before 10:30 AM using 2nd Day or Next Day Shipping WILL go out same day, yet my order for Naked City Criterion didn't go out yesterday. I called them and they said "Oops, for some reason it didn't get downloaded yesterday."

Even if you don't get around to picking up what you want before the sale ends, don't fret too much. If the price difference in this post is accurate, then you'll only have to pay less than $2 more per DVD, which isn't much once you consider the total price of the DVD. DVD Planet is a great place to get Criterions because they are so cheap anyway and they always have some kind of coupons if you order $60 or whatever worth.
