I thought it was a really fun show. Even the political comments were kept to a bearable level (at least for me). Hopefully the comments tomorrow will be at this level or even fewer (although I seriously doubt the show will be as entertaining and enjoyable as this was).

Looks like Far from Heaven is the big winner. Well deserving, since Oscar seems to have underappreciated it.

If it was a Miramax Production, I'm sure it would be a big contender at the oscars too.

For those that are fans of independent cinema and/or awards shows, the Independent Spirit Awards air tonight, on Bravo, at 10/9 Central. Just a heads up for anybody that wasn't aware or had let it slip their mind. It should make for a nice little Oscar preparation.

It was a good show. Sideways did it's thing, as expected...but I was glad to see Garden State win an award, and thrilled to see Primer get a best feature nomination. It's an amazing film considering it's budget. Go see it. Maria Full of Grace did pretty well, also. All in all, I'd say the Independent Spirit Awards have more credibility than the Oscars ever will...even if they're held in a tent in the middle of the afternoon with virtually no media coverage.

Oh, and Thomas Haden Church's speech...aww. Ditto for Giamatti's.

I am a big fan of Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchet is probably due, but after seeing Sideways last week and seeing Virginia at these awards, I'm totally hoping she wins. Supporting actress is usually a place where a big surprise takes place.

Did anyone else see Gretchen Mol sitting with Jeff Bridges? I wonder what that was about.

On the IFC channel, they replay the Independent Spirit Awards, and I was surprised to see different actors and actresses nominated that were not nominated for the Academy Award.

I figure it has to be for one of two reasons.

01: because these are essential low-budget, "independent" movies that the Oscar people never bother with?

02: these are good performances by Independent Spirit standards, but not worthy by Oscar standards?

I caught clips from two Best Supporting Actress nominations, and I thought the clips showcased great performances:

01: (from Friends With Money) Frances McDormand
She's in a department store, and she's arguing with people (black people - I forget) that are in the line with her. The store manager tells her she has to leave, and she says something like, Why? Because of THEM? Because of these fucking people?? The guy is literally pulling her out of his store, and she pleads, Can't I just buy the stuff I want?, and the manager says, No, I don't think so. So she just throws all the clothes she's holding at him, and attempts to storm out of the store - and crashes into a plate glass door and collapses.

02: (from American Gun) Marcia Gay Harden
She finds something left on her lawn, and sees two people walking away. She tries to confront them: did you leave this here? why did you leave this here? this is my home, I live here, why did you do this?? The two people are just ignoring her and are still walking away. The neighbor across the street is raking her lawn, and says to Harden: you deserve everything you get.

I thought those performances were so good that it prompted me to look up those two movies - but IMDB and other sites are saying those films are just "meh."

I think the only positive thing I can say about 'Friends with Money' was Frances McDormand's acting - and the above mentioned scene was rivetting.

03: The voters are film snobs who wouldn't dare vote for the Oscar-friendly mainstream movies, so they can feel superior and because they are so "independent".
