CALIGULA (1979) vs CALIGOLA (1982)

We all know Caligula, the 1979 Malcolm McDowell movie that bordered on porno with all the unsimulated sex scenes. What a hot flick!! C'mon, if you saw it as a male child (over the age of 9 and under the age of 12), then you was wackin' and watchin'.

-The lesbian scene in the hidden room
-The steamy orgy (Helen Mirren simulates an orgasm on film that's hotter than any real orgasm. Ok, so the cum coming out of that 15 foot penis was green and disgusting, but the two girls working on it were hot, hot, hot).

There was good acting (Peter O'Toole), ham acting (Malcolm McDowell), and bad acting (all the no-name performers). There was disgusting torture scenes (and the memorable "tie his pee pee up with a rubber band and fill him up with wine so I can cut open his stomach and watch all his entrails spill out!") that bordered on mildly interesting (the girl swishing over the hacksaw - ouch).

Anyway, I only just heard about the title of "Caligola," and didn't know if it held up as an unknown "must-see" - if it rivaled the hot sex seen in the 1979 film.

Are we missing anything with "Caligola?" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082133/

Clue #1: Joe D'Amato is involved.

Clue #2: From IMDB:
Plot Keywords:
Character Name In Title / Horse Penis...
The second... SECOND(!!) plot keyword is horse penis.

yeah sorry, I did say: import. I should have stated Region 2

in regards to the 1979 Caligula - I am surprised there hasn't been a remastered region 1 release. I read the French version (again Region 2) used a more pristine, less grainy print. A 'making of' docu on the region 1 release is quite fascinating.

its true you said import, but a lot of those imports on that site were Region 0, which means it can be played on any DVD player.

Just luck of the draw, I reckon.

Please take a look at it and let us know what the transfer is like. I've been thinking of picking this up to add to my Laura Gemser collection. (it would be nice to finally upgrade my old bootleg VHS of the film)

And I agree that CALIGULA should have a new remastered release. I can't see Penthouse bothering to do that anytime soon though. Too bad someone couldn't licence it from them and do it right.

I don't know if I could get through a Joe D'Amato film, even for my favorite historical figure. I'll admit an affection for the Peter O'Toole flick, but my heart is with I, Claudius and John Hurt's portrayal (where I got my screen name from-A play off the sequel book, "Claudius the God". Caligula was at his maddest when he proclaimed himself a god.).
