CompUSA closing 100 out of 229 stores in 2007

http://consumerist.com/consumer/comp...res-239260.php

CompUSA will close 100 stores this year, according to an industry insider speaking to us under conditions of anonymity.

Currently, CompUSA has 229 stores.

News of the shuttering comes after recent corporate restructuring, and a swirl of rumors in recent weeks about the ailing retailer. One was that CompUSA might get a $400 million-plus infusion from Mr. Carlos Slim, Mexican billionaire chain owner. Another one posited that the retailer might buy, or be bought by, Tiger Direct.

Hammered by competition from Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, and internet retailers, and burdened by over $100 million in unsalesable store inventory, Mr. Slim evidently thinks CompUSA's chances at recovery too narrow.

This bodes well for shoppers. Can we say fire sale? — BEN POPKEN

Not officially confirmed yet, but the writing is on the wall. They were the place to go in the 90's.

That's too bad. I hate to see people lose jobs. But I guess if the people that run places like that can't do it right then everyone suffers. Well, everyone except the Clearance shoppers.

I remember back in the day there would be like 100 people waiting to get in there on a Saturday morning. Now there is one about 5 miles from me and I think I have gone in there maybe 4 times in the last year and I think I only bought something once.

Just last week I bought 2 laptops for the office, including the one i'm using right now, for below the cost. CompUSA was actually losing money selling these items.

Even the clearance shoppers might not get a good deal if they're not closing the entire chain down. In situations like this they usually put blowout prices on the absolute junk and then just transfer the remaining inventory to other locations.

Thats a shame, but not really a big deal to me anymore. I wish CompUSA carried more "do it yourself" parts a la Fry's as i'd probably frequent there more often for computer equipment. Of course, when i can get something from like NewEgg in a day and for 30% cheaper, CompUSA becomes even more useless.

I used to work there for many years. in fact, the store i worked at in my area (naperville, IL), closed down last year. doesn't surprise me though, even when i worked there 8 years ago there was never anyone in there.

when this store closed down though, they really did mark down everything. 20% off some items, 50% of others. i almost bought a pair of shure headphones, i think they were at 20% off at the time. really wasn't a bad deal. Sad to see them go, but everyone in this post was right, no one goes there anymore. they only thing keeping them afloat is thier corporate sales. only bad part is that i have a good friend still working for them. hopefully his job remains!

Compu USA used to be pretty great as a computer store. Now, they are basically BB/CC. Microcenter rules these guys. My new house is like 5 mins. from one. That will be scary.

I agree. When they had last year's Store Closure Sale there were some deals but nothing great.

I agree with this. I needed a HDD power cord a few months ago and they didn't have any. Five years ago that wouldn't have been a problem. I guess they need to spend all their money on stocking DVDs that no one will buy.

I've never lived near one, nor stepped foot in one. I won't miss them.

The nearest one to me is in the same shopping mall as CC with a BB right across the street and Frys down the street. Probably one on the chopping block.

According to the folks at SD, this is confirmed, and the liquidating starts TOMORROW!

Here's the revised list of stores they will have AFTER the closings. If you don't see your local store on the list, it's closing up shop.

Looks like both Columbus stores are done for. I guess I'll swing by the next time we hit Easton.

When I put in my zip it says the closest one is 42 miles away in another state. I know there were atleast 4, probably more, that were within 20 or so miles of me.

If I get out of work early enough tonight I'll hit the one by me that is closing down, and see if they have anything work picking up.

Interesting observation. When I put in my zip code it seems to indicate that the closest one to me is closing too. (Wilkins Twp/Monroeville (east side of Pittsburgh, PA)

Just went to the local CompUSA that's closing and they have a lot of stuff (not everything) marked with the 10% signs. I'll wait for the 20 or 30% ones.

My paper had an ad for the store closings. 7 stores were listed. No mention of how much OFF anything was though.

My PC buying habits evolved like this:

First PC - 1995 Circuit City
2nd - 1997 CompUSA
3rd - 2004 Costco

and I am pretty much never gonna go outside a Costco or Sams Club for my PC needs.
