Question about "Scent of a Woman"

My mom told me she watched this on TV the other day and to my surprise, liked it (I wouldn't have thought it would be her thing). Anyway, at some point she was interrupted and didn't see the reveal of

Spoiler:
how Al Pacino's character was blinded.

I've seen a bit of this on TV but didn't care for it and didn't see or remember this specific point. Can anyone help?

Use spoiler tags please for those who haven't seen the movie.

Thanks in advance.

The scene is where
Spoiler:
Al Pacino's character uninvitedly joins in his brother's family dinner.
It was half way into the film I believe.

I can't exactly remember the details but the story gets told by
Spoiler:
his nephew who in a stir explains that he lost his sight while playing with a hand grenade intoxicated. In process killing a bystander/friend.
