Nationally, that list is wrong. No way the World Cup is that high and the WS is that low.

If you read the Forbes article, they explain it pretty well. The World Series is lower because MLB doesn't have a separate television rights contract for the WS. It's part of the regular and post season contract with FOX. (I'm pretty sure that's what they were getting at anyway)

I didn't bother reading it. I will have to do that.

In theory, the FIFA World Cup should be #1, provided FIFA can figure out how to take advantage of the advertising potential of a couple of billion viewers worldwide daily during the run of the World Cup.

I changed the thread title to reflect the actual Forbes article because when I read "Top 10 Sports Brands", I was expecting things like Nike.

I thought that "Top 10 Sports Brands" was going to list the sports teams who sold the most licensed merchandise. Any idea where I can get a list of this? I did read recently that North Carolina had been the top seller in college gear for five years straight, but then Texas took the top spot last year...which just doesn't make any sense...

I wish they would have done a comparitive TV viewership list, so we could see how that list compares to what worldwide viewers are most interested in. I'm guessing the Super Bowl would still be #1 on the viewership list, but others would be lower down.
And shouldn't the overall National Championship game now be more valuable than the Rose Bowl itself? I can see where the Rose Bowl would have been a better brand BEFORE the BCS.

The Rose Bowl sells their rights seperately from the rest of the BCS bowls, and has a pretty lucrative contract with ABC.

Not sure why it wouldn't make any sense for Texas, they have very successful football, basketball, and baseball teams and Cat Osterman is a very popular softball pitcher.

Texas won the National Title in college football last year. Texas fans gobbling up all of that merchandise + bandwagon fans doing the same = $$$$$$$$$$$$$.

The television viewership for the WC final alone (not counting the 63 other matches) is more than ten times that of the combined viewership of a seven game World Series

See, you are counting the entire world, though. The World Series doesn't get played around the world like soccer does. I'm sure it probably still wouldn't be close, but you can't compare something that's shown worldwide to something that's essentially only shown nationally.

I've never understood the NFL's stance on the use of "Super Bowl". They constantly hand out cease and desist orders to anyone using the term. Even if said parties are giving away trips to the Super Bowl, if they don't have the NFL's consent, they have to say things like "the Big Game in Miami".

The articles listed are counting the entire world.
And it is the "World" Series after all ( -wink- )

No offense to everyone who has had critical things to say about this article, but come on, I think the people at Forbes know a little more about the value of brands than any of us. I mean, they are calculating the value, not anything subjective like saying what is "cooler" or what is more "prestigious."
