What director has the most NC-17 rated films?

Well after reading that the Almodovar box set contains 3 films that are rated NC-17 that makes 5 for Pedro :

Law of Desire
Matador
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down
Kika
Bad Education

Is there any other director that has more than this?

Bertolucci has three:

'The Dreamers'
'1900' (Director's cut: theatrical release version had NC-17 rating attached on poster, current DVD: unrated)
'Last Tango in Paris' (rerated from original X)

Pasolini has three:

'Salo' (this film according to imdb was submitted to the MPAA which, no surprise was branded with the NC-17 rating)
'Arabian Nights' (Image laserdisc carries NC-17 rating)
'Canterbury Tales' (same as above)

I know John Waters has made his fair share of NC-17 flicks. I don't know of all of them but he made:

Pink flamingoes
A dirty shame

'Female Trouble' also has an official NC-17 rating.

Ruggero Deodato had a couple that were rated X (prior to NC-17):

Jungle Holocaust
Cannibal Holocaust

He also had “The House on the Edge of the Park”, check out the world-wide ratings:
UK:R (original rating: 1981)
Australia:Refused Classification
Canada: (Banned) (Ontario)
Canada:18+ (Quebec)
Italy:VM18 / UK: (Banned) (1984-2002)
UK:18 (heavily cut
USA:Unrated
Norway: (Banned) (video rating)

By the way, Cannibal Holocaust 2 is slated for 2009 (per IMDB).

As far as Almodovar goes, I had no idea that Kika and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! were rated NC-17 (before the production company refused the rating, so technically they are unrated). The story lines are certainly twisted but there’s nothing really graphic in the sex scenes. By the way, I love the ending of Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (when they are in the car)

According to MPAA.org, only 48 movies have been officially rated NC-17, and Salo's not on the list. I think this list is incomplete though, because Henry & June isn't on the list, but I know the DVD is carries a NC-17 rating.

The former X-Rating of theatrical movies are currently known as NC-17. Unrated films depicts simulated, explicit sex scenes, and also may contain extreme graphic violence, that contributes to its rating.

From IMDB: (Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down) - One of the films that was instrumental in bringing about the introduction of the NC-17 rating in the U.S., as the film's distributor took the MPAA to court over the X certification it had initially been designated.

From what I know, it was between: Tie Me Up,Tie Me Down & The Cook,The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover that caused the creation of the NC-17. Both those films were originally given X ratings and they premiered in the US in 1990. The first film released as NC-17 I believe was Henry & June. By the time Kika came around which was 1993, it was released with an NC-17 in the US.

The X-rating was never officially trademarked for the MPAA, hence why hard core porn films took the rating for themselves.

the film is not even findable in the MPAA's database of rated films.

anything that the board finds unacceptable to under 17 year olds would fall into the NC-17 realm, this also surprisingly includes explicit sex-related dialogue 'Clerks' had problems with the board in regards to this. 'The Aristocrats' didn't even bother submitting to the MPAA, knowing that the language would be the major stumbling block. Stand up comedian films like Andrew Dice Clay's and Eddie Murphy's either accepted the rating or were considerably edited to "R" standards.

Also, not every 'unrated' film is of NC-17 content. Many smaller studios/distributors don't even bother submitting to the MPAA since their isn't enough money in the budget to do so. And if and when a studio does play the rating's game and unfortunately gets branded a NC-17 rating, there is no money left to go through the appeals process. The MPAA may claim it's voluntary to get an official rating, but the whole monatary aspect is a veiled aspect that goes unmentioned.

it's interesting to note that only three films in Joe Molotov's list are rated NC-17 other than explicit sex/nudity:

Title: Evil Dead (1994)
Rating: NC-17
Rating Reason: Rated NC-17 for substantial graphic horror violence and gore.
Distributor: Mca Home Entertainment

Title: Tower Of Terror (1992)
Rating: NC-17
Rating Reason: Rated NC-17 for extreme horror violence.
Distributor: Concorde Pictures

Title: Man Bites Dog (1993)
Rating: NC-17
Rating Reason: Rated NC-17 for strong graphic violence.
Distributor: Roxie Releasing
btw, I've never seen any video version of 'Evil Dead' with said rating. It has become the norm nowadays for horror/graphically violent action films to just be "UNRATED" and wear it like sort of badge of honor. The flipside is that the term unrated just means any footage reincorporated back into the film regardless if it were for lesser 'less restrictive' rating.

I'm tooting my horn here, but here's my list of films that exist in varying versions some of which were at one point rated NC-17 (some not):

Unrated/R-rated/'alternate cut' films on DVD (Region 1 only)

Irreversible wasn't rated NC-17? That's gotta be one of the most hardcore movies I own.

It is odd. I don't recall its rating specifically, but when I did see it during its theatrical run, there was an extra usher at the theater door checking IDs.

I thought NC-17 was invented by the studios because the X rating had a porn stigma attached to it...whether this is true or not I have no idea.
