Advice on Amazon sale.

I sold the HD DVD version of The Mummy Returns on Amazon last week; however, upon receiving the item, the buyer realized that she didn't have an HD DVD player. She thought she could play it simply because she has an HDTV. Anyway, she sent me an email asking whether she can return it to me. I don't want to take it back, because I made 18 bucks from the sale and I feel it's a "buyer beware" situation when one buys used merchandise, but I don't want to come off as an asshole, either. Any advice on how I should handle the situation? Thanks!

My thought exactly...but I *do* love my 100% positive feedback . Perhaps I'll meet her halfway and refund only 50%.

Is she hot?

Seriously, if she's nice about it, I would probably let her return it. You're sure to find someone else to buy it (and probably one who can actually play it!). I understand the power of the 100% positive rating. However, I've never experienced this kind of situation, and I can totally understand the opposite viewpoint. Tricky one.

tell her you will repost it and she can hold onto it and ship it if it sells.

if it sells, she can ship it directly to the new buyer. if it doesn't, she has to keep it.

That could lead to a lot of problems.

I told her I'd refund her money, less the fees Amazon charged me, but not until I receive the HD DVD. I can list the thing again, but I won't get as much as I got this time. It sucks, but the whole format thing can be pretty freakin' confusing for people who don't know a damn thing about it.

if you want to keep your perfect rating, you might have to refund her the money. i had a buyer recently who bought a textbook from me and informed me that she wanted to return it because she couldn't get the class. i had to offer her a refund. i did tell her i wouldn't refund her until i got the book but instead of giving it just a week, she filed an A-Z guarantee on me. nice huh? the issue is resolved now but what a pain it was to deal with.

If it was opened when you sent it to her, you could give her a refund after she returns it in the same condition you sent it in. You'd be out the initial postage, but I think Amazon negates the commission, and buyer pays return shipping.
If it was sealed and she opened it, you can charge a restock fee.
I'd probably give the refund, assuming the item returns back to you like you sent it to her.
You could argue this point:
"If the item you purchased is a software title, it can only be returned in cases of defect, damage or if the item was different than described. "
I'm expecting my first returned item any day now it was an electronic device, new but defective.
KatSagirl: Yeah, that's crap.

i didn't want to refund her at all. i mean it's not like the item was defective or anything. she claimed on the A-Z that it wasn't up to her standards. i don't understand why people buy books and then try to return it? i buy a book when i know i have the class and i will keep it. even the University bookstore has its policies.

to the OP, good luck with all this.

I believe Amazon emailed a new return policy to all marketplace sellers that says if it is unopened you must allow the person to return it. But you are allowed a restocking fee of a certain amount. (I think it was 10 or 15 percent)Read amazon for details. So you must accept return according to new policy instituted in the last month. They said they wanted a return policy that was universal to amazon.com which includes their own products.

If the Dvd item was opened when you sent it you don't have much to lose; just a little of your time. If it wasn't opened when you sent it but is now, you won't get as much for it.

I wouldn't have refunded it for her. She can't read, she can't read. And, if she can read but has no idea what HD is, again, that's her problem. Call me crazy, but it's the buyers responsibility to buy the right item.

Put me in the "no refunds" corner. I always tell my eBay customers that I'm just some guy, not a business. If you want hassle free returns, go to Walmart. You trade CS for value.
