Need help finding name of this movie with...

...this scene:

It's set in the country, maybe during the West.
A young boy (about age 10) is looking for something. (I think it's a horse.) He finds it, surrounded by at least one eagle (or hawk, or some bird of prey), who is attacking it.

He does battle with it, and at times the bird claws his stomach and the kid screams (blood-curdlingly so). He eventually fends off the bird even though he gets pretty scratched up. Then a man - maybe his father - carries him away and they talk...the kid is still stunned, but alive.

Those damn images have haunted me for years. I know I saw the movie on TV, but I was a kid back then and was horrified by the bloody fight between the hawk and the kid.

Any leads would be appreciated.

I'm pretty sure this is Desperately Seeking Susan.

My guess is Thunderhead-- Son of Flicka. I have not seen the movie, but the scene you describe is very similar to a scene from the book Thunderhead.

Deleted scene from the third episode of the Brady Bunch arc where they go to the
Grand Canyon? Did the kid fend off the bird with a flashlight full of baked beans?

The Red Pony (1949)

http://imdb.com/title/tt0041792/

I saw the movie as a kid and never forgot that scene. It's was a bunch of buzzards that was attacking the boy as he was trying to save his pony. I believe it's was Robert Mitchum who played the family hired hand that carry the boy not his father.

Thank you, dom56, for your assistance! You've saved me hours of more fruitless research.

Much obliged!

And for all you others who tried to help with your "hilarious" answers: May a buzzard claw you in the gut.
