Bummed by the CoM's shutout in best director/picture, but I didn't think there was enough support for the little film that could, so not surprised, just disappointed (especially since I don't get all the love LMS is getting, even now, 6 months after its theatrical release).

I'm surprised that Babel got so many noms, I guess Hollywood isn't tired of the fractured narrative storytelling device yet. I guess it being the "International" version of Crash helped.

Dreamgirls didn't deserve a BP or BD nom because there were more worthy nominees this year in those categories.

If Scorsese gets his BD oscar, I think it's going to be for body of work because amongst the 5 nominees this year, I'd rank his effort in "The Departed" only 3rd (Eastwood and Greengrass over Scorsese).

I'm happy with the nominations (kind of went over it in the other thread but what the hell). Loved Little Miss Sunshine (not my favorite movie of the year, but certainly in my top 5), glad Monster House got nominated, glad Pan's got six nominations, glad Children of Men got some recognition, and glad Dreamgirls got shutout of Best Pic.

I think part of the recogniition for Little Miss Sunshine was that it was the little film that could, I've been reading a lot of disgruntled reviews of it lately (IGN's DVD review comes to mind, who seems to review it squarely off the hype that it didn't live up to), but on top of that, I've been hugely entertained by it the 3 times I've seen it, plus it gave me the biggest laughs of the year for a film not called Borat. Children of Men wasn't so much a little film that could, it was a massive film ($72m+ budget) that was under publicized, but still prevailed somewhat.

Also happy Curse of the Golden Flower and The Prestige got some recognition.

After seeing the Editing list, I'm saying the race is between the favorite, The Departed, and the runner up, Babel. I believe it's now been 26? consecutive years since a film won Best Picture, but failed to get nominated for Editing.

Which is odd, since editing was one of the few areas I felt The Departed was lacking.

Click being an oscar nominated movie just makes me laugh hysterically.

I'm mostly happy. I was thrilled that Dreamgirls didn't make the cut, but am still kind of bitter that The Queen did so well. It was a very good movie...but it was an acting showcase - the rest felt TV movie-ish to me. I think the fact that other great movies like Little Children and Children of Men (a sure thing for cinematography) got shut out of this category and especially directing, yet The Queen managed to land in both just pisses me off.

I'm thrilled that Mark Wahlberg and Abagail Breslin got noms. Not surprised that the academy didn't have the balls to nominate Sacha Baron Cohen for Borat, but at least they gave Ryan Gosling a much deserved nod.

I'm really glad that Letters From Iwo Jima got some serious love, as well as Pan's Labyrinth. These are two movies that people NEED to see. And I'm glad there was no upset with the Departed, because I just love the hell out of that movie. Should be a very interesting Oscars this year IMO.

*Excited for Dreamgirls snub in the two big categories. Not that great a film.
*Knowing Children of Men wasn't getting in the two big categories, the smaller love is great!

Jackie Earle Haley, "Little Children"

OMG - isn't that the little kid from 1976's The Bad News Bears? With the long stringy hair?! This kid is having what is supposed to be a huge comeback, and not one person is even discussing him! Amazing.

I think it's because most people haven't seen Little Children. If they had, they'd know that Haley gives a very chilling, restrained performance that is really surprising. I don't think he has a great chance of winning, but the nomination is greatly deserved.

Mark Wahlberg - "The Departed" (Best Supporting Actor)

Holy Crap!! That guy --- I tried to buy drugs from him once a long time ago, then he beat the shit out of me and robbed me! Now he's nominated for an Academy Award?!

In all seriousness (?), I'm very happy to see Wahlberg getting even more successful as the years go on. You talk about an inauspicious beginning - that's Mark. A high school drop-out drug dealer, thief, busted and thrown in jail. If that were my kid, I'd think he would wind up a career-criminal and I would hide my valuables every time he came to visit. I wouldn't think he'd have much going for him.

Then...because of his brother Donnie and New Kids On The Block, Mark is taken under Donnie's wing. The rest is history (underware fashion model/rap star-turned-actor)...I guess if Donnie Wahlberg didn't exist, Mark Wahlberg would not be a house-hold name today. Obviously, if Mark didn't have the talent he has, he wouldn't have made it very far either, but if he does happen to win the trophy and honor for his turn as Det. Dignam at the Oscars, I hope he has enough foresight to thank his brother.

On another note, I wonder if Denis Leary is eating his heart out (he was originally slated to play the role that got Mark his Oscar-nomination).

On to the techs, both Eastwood movies get Sound Editing noms. Superman gets 0 sound nominations. 0 for Casino Royale. Poseidon with 1 nomination (fx)!

Just realized Emily Blunt didn't get a nomination for supporting actress for "The Devil Wears Prada". Thought that was a shoe in. Wish "The Illusionist" had received more nominations but glad it got one for cinematography. And nothing for "The Painted Veil". Which surprises me.

But a big oh hell yeah for "Pan's Labyrinth" getting 6 nominations!!!

In all, I'm quite happy with this year's choices. Departed, Pan's Labyrinth, United 93, Children of Men, Letters from Iwo Jima, Little Children all got recognized pretty well. I have got to see Letters and Pan's Labyrinth this weekend.

of the animated films, I thought the underrated Ant Bully was my personal fave, to bad the Academy didn't consider it for inclusion. Props to Hoodwinked, Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman and I enjoyed it.
