At first I thought Criterion would actually release 2001: A Space Odyssey by some coupe. But the Chris Marker clue (director of La Jetee, the short film that inspired 12 Monkeys) does seem like 12 Monkeys may get the Criterion treatment, hopefully with Chris Marker's short included at the original length in the original French (it was only available on the DVD Short 2: Dreams, shortened and with English dub).

Yeah, as noted here, this is probably Sans Soleil, not 12 Monkeys.

If it is 12 Monkeys, the only thing they could really add to it that would excite people are deleted scenes (which I know exist) and La Jetee, which would be very sweet.

"12 Monkeys" was inspired by Chris Marker's "La Jetee - so while there is a possibility Criterion will release Gilliam's film (and that would be great, it's one of my favorites), I think that that is just a cute little reference that some film buffs can pat themselves on the back for getting. Of course we could be getting the two Chris Marker films AND the Gilliam film, which would be freakin' cool. The Marker films just seem more up Criterion's alley since they don't currently have any region 1 release (as far as I know.) The current "12 Monkeys" disc is quite good, in my opinion, though I guess that isn't necessarily going to stop them if they've found some really cool material for a release and can get the rights. They have already released several Gilliam films, so...
To break it down:
"Marker your calendars" would be a reference to Chris Marker, while "the sun coming out" is likely a reference to "Sans Soleil", which translates to "Without Sun" (I think.) And the fact that it is one of 12 monkeys telling us this could be a clue that "La Jetee" could also be a part of the set.
That's my interpretation, at least.

I really doubt they would release 12 Monkeys now, they've stated numerous times in the past that the doc on the Universal disc was pretty comprehensive. Anyways, the picture looks more like 12 Apes than 12 Monkeys.

the short 02 dreams disc has two commentaries. one by Gilliam and one by the screenwriters of 12 monkeys. Oddly enough i was just watching it last night. good news whether its the marker films, or the gilliam film with the marker film as an extra.

I have the R2 La Jetee/Sans Soleil disc and would be on the fence about buying a Criterion edition, but if they were to offer a collection of Marker's films beyond those two... sold!
