be careful of the haunting - I read that the transfer was really poor. Great film - but will wait for a better transfer.

I don't know where you read that the transfer was poor. This disc is easily the best the movie has ever looked on home video.

Most reviews say that the transfer is "good but not great". Obviously it's not up to the standards of Warner's best restorations. But any problems are slight and don't detract from the enjoyment of the film.

Considering that The Haunting is one of the greatest horror movies ever made, and you can get it for under $8 shipped at DDD, I wouldn't wait for a re-release that may never come.

Here's some reviewer's comments on the transfer:

DVD UP CLOSE
"Things begin a bit shaky, with some shivering and grain during the opening credits. Afterwards, the image remains stellar and sharp. The black and white image has beautiful contrast and sheen to it. With the exception of a few exterior shots at the one hour mark, the image is free of serious defects and grain. This is the best I have ever seen The Haunting look."

DVD SAVANT
"The picture is enhanced and sharp, but some scenes are contrasty and lacking in detail, as if the film element were down a generation."

DVD MOVIE CENTRAL
"The transfer, for the most part, is quite good. The contrast levels are very solid with deep blacks and bright whites. The picture is quite sharp with extremely good clarity. Still, there are some small problems. The print used for this DVD suffers from some fading associated with its age. There is also the constant presence of dust and debris as well as occasional minor scratches. Against the black & white photography, these imperfections are not readily noticeable, but they are still there. The transfer also has a trace of edge enhancement. Nevertheless, aside from these minor blemishes, this is as good as I have ever seen The Haunting. It looks great, and this DVD should please the film's legions of fans."

"The black-and-white contrasts are well rendered, and most definition is sharp. There are, however, some few tiny age flecks to be seen throughout the film and some minor line shimmer, but they are not serious enough issues to be distracting. Darker areas of the screen have a slightly gritty look, but in general there is little transfer grain of note."

"I had hoped for a restored print to be used here, but Warner has supplied an untreated presentation. Even so, the print used is solid, though it does show some nicks, scuffs, and other signs of wear & tear. In some scenes, the print defects become frequent, but most sequences have only minor instances of debris, though grain can be problematic also. The image remains sharp and effective however, as softness never proves to be much of an issue. The gorgeous black & white visuals come off well on the whole, thanks to smooth and well balanced black levels. I did detect some inconsistent moments, but overall, contrast is well executed. So yes, I would have loved to had a new restored presentation, but this isn't a bad treatment in the least."
