This sounds very reasonable even without the discs. It's essentially about $2 or so for a movie, which is certainly cheaper than other download rental services. Plus, if a movie sucks you can give up on it and not be charged for a full rental.

Working now after a tip on hackingnetflix website. Went to help, searched for "watch now" clicked on the first answer and voila, a watch now tab appears on my account. Watching a movie right now, very slick!

Your system is not compatible with instant viewing
Your computer's operating system is not compatible with instant viewing.
Try again from a computer running Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista.
To watch instantly, you need a computer with the following configuration:
----
That's crap. Windows Media files work fine on my Mac with Flip4Mac installed.
I don't really want to watch movies on my computer anyway though.

It appears that there was no hack - just that some peeps who thought they had found a hack were already eligible for the service.
In checking just now, I noticed I am now eligible (I wasn't initially). I tried to access the service but gave up after a crapload of update requests, installs and then an error message pertaining to Windows Media Player. I'm sure I will get it all sorted eventually...

Well, I have access now, after clicking through the help screen. I'll check it out at home. I'm not sure if work would notice the bandwidth, but I'd rather not risk it.
This will be cool for tv on dvd, if the quality isn't great.

I thought the video quality was pretty good, close to dvd on my 19" LCD monitor in full screen mode. I was only able to get the "Good" speed rating even though I am on a cable modem which should be capable of at least 1 mb/sec download. I really considering getting a media center pc to connect up to the living room TV as I typically don't like to watch movies on my computer. Also sucks that minimum spec is Windows XP, my work laptop is 2000. I would probably use the feature when on travel, oh well supposedly this year we are upgrading to XP.
Understand it isnt a hack I never had the "Watch Now" tab until I went through this little secret process.

does it really require IE. I also have to say looking through the initial list there's very little on there I would want to watch that I don't already own. Seems to be a idea anyway, hopefully they'll add more titles as they go...

Tier Data rate
High - 1.6 to 2.2+ Mbps
Good - 1.0 Mbps
Basic - 500 Kbps
I'm just under the highest quality with 1.5 Mbps. But yeah, I'm pretty impressed with the quality as well--watched "SherryBaby" on my laptop last night with no problems thus far.

Tried it last night and there were a few hicups getting it started (had to update some programs) but overall it seemed to work ok. Lack of titles/features may keep me from using it too often, but it seems to be a good way to get through the Dr. Who stuff
BTW a thought occured to me to create a "play now" queue using the profile feature (create a new profile that has "0" for the number of DVDs allowed and then just put the watch now stuff in there). I can't activate the watch now tab for it but I dropped them an email to see if they'll do it. Maybe if more people ask them about it they'll make it an easier process/feature of the watch now ability. Just a thought...
EDIT: I also just found there is a new link under your account page called "Instant Watching Activity" it seems we are limited to 18hrs/billing cycle. Just an FYI as I haven't seen anyone mention this yet...

Yes that was mentioned in the video demo I watched last week. I didn't see the link under my account page. If I remember correctly it counts actual time watched so you can start/stop as many different movies as you want. I thought that was pretty cool, some of the movies available may not warrant a complete viewing.

I tried it out earlier today. The quality was much better than youtube, better than most online video. If I had a better video card and monitor, it would probably look even better.
I started a movie, Demonlover, which sucked, so I shut it off about 15 min in. When I checked my "Instant Watching Activity" it said I had used the 15 min, and I had 16 hrs and 45 min left until Feb 1st. It would then start over with 17 hrs.
The selection of movies, at this point, isn't all that hot. I imgaine more will be added as time goes on. I'm definitely happy for this service, as it will be great to watch tv on dvd.
