I found some cough syrup in my bathroom and took a swig. It tasted worse than usual. I mean bad. I checked the expiration date and it said 11/02!!! That can't be good can it? It actually stopped my cough for about an hour or so. Will I die?

Good to know. Too bad I don't have a dog. I'd give you the honor of getting rid of it.

At least the cough is low priority now.:)

A Google search for "Expired Cough Syrup" yielded this poem that you might find useful:

Expired Cough Syrup
lyrics by Sue Hutchinson

I drank Expired Cough Syrup and went psychotic for a night.
The candle started crackling, Death almost took a bite.
My heart it started beating fast,
And sweat broke on my forehead.
I nearly called 911, but I had SuperDog instead.

Don’t drink Expired Cough Syrup. Don’t drink Expired Cough Syrup.

The goddess came and intervened.
In the form of my guitar.
Strumming chords, space in between,
From Death’s door, it took me far.

Don’t drink Expired Cough Syrup. Don’t drink Expired Cough Syrup.

... Will I die?
Yes. Sorry.

And I call dibs on your TV / DVD player.

Check yourself directly into the nearest morgue. Save everybody some time and effort. Don't donate your organs, they'll all be useless within the next couple of minutes.

The colors. My god, the colors........

Well I made it through the night. I think I'll be ok.

I think Joe's poem gave me the strength.

So your dvds and players are spoken for...what kind of car do you have? If it's a cool car then I call dibs on it. If it's lame then I call dibs on whatever you have of value. :D

And you should be fine.

I found this in a court document :

An expert witness in clinical
pharmacy testified that ingestion of plastic-contaminated cough syrup
could cause kidney failure, decreased liver function, neurological
toxicity, and paralysis. Those effects could also result if expired
cough syrup were ingested. Gov't C.A. Br. 13.

I was precribed Trazodone back in 98. I found the bottle about 6 months ago with some pills left. A few weeks later I was having trouble getting to sleep so I took one and woke up in the morning, still alive.

A few years ago I misread the instructions on a bottle of Benadryl and gave myself 2.5 times the adult dose. I realized it right after I swallowed it. Tried making myself puke, but that didn't work.

Called poison hotline - they said I'd be ok but to have someone watch me. This was at night so I went to sleep, but I kept waking up because I couldn't stop my left arm from jerking. I felt really weird, too.

Good thing this happened before I got into medical school or I would have had to sue myself for malpractice!

Odds are it will simply be ineffective. Drugs don't particularly mutate into something lethal once they break down. <-- Not advice from a professional

How are you going to do that if you're paralyzed? Think, man! This is life or death here.

hopefully he left instructions to post an update on his fridge, so that in a few days when the neighbors go to investigate that rancid stench coming from his house and find him dead and rotting on the floor.. they will have the courtesy to let us know.. so we can ask for.. pics.

I'm taking Pharm this semester so I know nothing, but my friend the pharmacist says expired tylenol can cause deafness (and I'm not joking about Rush Limbaugh, who took too many painkillers, not expired ones).

Also, drugs in solid form are more stable, generally, then liquid form. But I'd still respect the dates. Unless I was on a deserted island or something. Why take the chance?

Not sure that's right. There was a report about a link between hydrocodone+acetaminophen abuse (aka Vicodin, aka Rush's good time) and deafness, but nothing I'm aware of about expired acetaminophen.

Search of tylenol.com, drugs.com, google in general, and asking a pharmacist I know all yield results that point to a misunderstanding somewhere.

Probably was a misunderstanding (and it was from a few years ago). I'll ask this person again. Or you could just have her call me.

Certain drugs definitely decompose into toxic and lethal compounds, but I doubt that anything sold OTC would be in this class because we'd have people dying left and right. Still, I'd trash it because it might be way less or more effective than it is intended to be, or decompose into compounds that interact dangerously with other medications you might be taking.

I asked him again and he said the details elude him (he's retired), but maintains that it's one of the few drugs that degrades to a toxic compound.

Sorry that I don't have more info. I couldn't find anything either. It could be that since this pharmacist is "old-school" that he was taught something they don't teach anymore.

Thanks for checking. For good measure I'll ask that pharmacist I questioned (my wife) to check with other pharmacist friends to see if they have a sense of the issue.

He was good enough to followup with me. He now says that he misremembered and that the drug that does degrade to a toxic substance is tetracycline.

He was thinking about acetaminophen (tylenol) because he says a lot of people try to kill themselves with tylenol.

Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah. They mix it with a bunch of alcohol. They usually end up alive with liver damage after a charcoal NG tube.
