Wii 24hour connection? How do you know?

I have my Wii set the 24hour connect even when it is off but how do I tell if its working? At first the disc area would stay blue even turned off but now nothing.
On my PC the Nintendo Wi-Fi window says "one or more users connected" only if I am net channel like Weather, Shop or Web.
If I go back to the main area or a game the Wi-Fi on the pc reads that "No users are connected"
I looked at the setting and it is set for the 24hour connection.

As I understand the Wii, it is not truly a 24 hour connection. It logs into the Nintendo servers intermittently to check for updates or e-mail. This would explain why typically you see "no users are connected" on the dongle. If you want to see if it works, simple send your Wii an e-mail. If within about an hour you have a blue glow emanating from around you Wii, then it is all fine and dandy.
