If a dvd is not available for instore pick up (as in the store never carries it), but is available on the website, will they allow you to return it?

If your item was purchased online, you can either bring it to a Best Buy store location or return it by mail to our return center.
You will receive a credit for your purchase only if it meets the criteria in our Return Policy. We do not offer merchandise exchanges. This policy applies only to purchases made directly from BestBuy.com and may vary slightly from Best Buy store return policies.

Actually it's 3 times a year, but they are usually more lieniant towards after christmas returns. I worked at Best Buy about 3 years ago during the holidays, but I don't quite remember what their who return policy without a receit was.

There's another thread about this where a number of us posted our experiences with returning merchandise to Best Buy after the holidays. Each store appears to be different. My closest store only allows one no receipt return every 365 days, and they will only accept merchandise that their particular store carries (even if it's on Best Buy's website or available at other Best Buys).

Best Buy apparently purged a lot of items from their system and won't give refunds. A family member tried to return their Stargate thickpacks to exchange for the thin ones, and in the 2 or 3 days since I returned mine, the thick packs were removed from the system.
A friend tried to return the Superbowl collections (3 sets, 5 discs each). No luck, no longer in the system (they were in the night before when someone else returned them).

I was just @ the Cerritos (CA.) store returning some Animes that BestBuy.com carries online... I've lost the gift receipt during giftwrap cleanups. The cashier said that the store didn't carry those titles and/or purged from the system... so no go.
It's pretty lame that every location seems to be able to act on their own.

they aren't taking no receipt returns on items not found in store. so you need to check inventory on the website to make sure it's still be carried. mostly new releases and tv on dvd are what they have now because BR and HD are eating into shelf space.

I believe Sweet Baby James is correct about the 3 times without a receipt. But my take on Best Buy is that although they have firm policies in place, each store seems to do their own version of the corporate policy.
This is similar to gambling in Vegas!
