I won't get to see Rocky until Sunday night, but that's the one I'm rooting for this weekend. Solid debut.

This was a great movie!!! I am going to see it numerous times.

12-21-06, 07:23 PM
Wow. Opening night it made 25% of its budget back. Not bad. So what should we expect from it through the weekend? $20MM? $25MM? Seems like word of mouth is good.

Mr. Cinema
12-21-06, 07:26 PM
Most critics gave it a thumbs up. I would say it'll earn at least $20 million Friday - Sunday. It'll probably drop today, but still earn maybe around $3-4 million. So that could be a $30 million, 5-day start, which would be good for this series.

A feel good comeback for a movie that is universally love (the original Rocky) at Christmas time - and to top it all off, good to great reviews? Sylvester can start printing money now.

Time to fess up, we all thought it was going to be Gigli bad, right?

No, I actually believed in this one from the first time Stallone started talking about the possibility of another Rocky movie 8 or so years ago.

I knew there were some good story possibilities there and I honestly believed that Stallone's pride wouldn't let him put out a crappy movie to end the series.

Went to the Curse of the Golden Flower today in Times Square and was pretty surprised by how many people were there on a Friday afternoon...It was pretty much sold out. Maybe this bodes well for it to get a larger release, although it is pretty different than Hero and HOFD so it might not be as well received by the general public.

Meh. Night at the Museum is a better "family" movie for the holidays so it makes sense to me, and the user reviews here are fairly positive. While there are times where I think the general audience is flawed for watching certain movies or other, this doesn't really seem like one of those times.

Not to mention Rocky is pure testosterone in the minds of many females. I'm thinking the ladies used Christmas cookies and Mrs. Claus outfits as a means of persuasion to see something else.

Don't feel too bad for Rocky Balboa. With that low 24 million dollar budget, it should easily make a profit on domestic grosses alone. We Are Marshall is the real sports flop of the holiday season.

We Are Marshall tanked! Wow...that was unexpected. I am surprised Pursuit of Happyness is playing so well...I mean, it's a decent enough movie, but I felt I had already seen it from having seen the trailer...watching the actual movie was a less satisfying 2 hours than the 2min preview - which speaks volumes to me personally. Rocky on the other hand deserves every dollar it makes IMO. Night will make decent money because of families (like the similarly mediocre Happy Feet did last month)...

Rocky Balboa should easily profit and gross about $40M in the U.S. and with DVD sales in about 6 months.

I'd guess Rocky's final will be around 60-65mill. Not sure how the movies do overseas... Stallone has been more popular there since... well forever.

I grew up on Rocky , so I don't see how your 5 year old girl can't like Rocky. Is it because she's a girl?

I'm going to give up this fight, but I'm still ashamed at people for seeing that Museum flick. I've said my final word.

This is ridiculous, be ashamed all you want, I'm still offended by the "Stupid Americans" comment followed by the vomiting smiley. So because people don't like what you deem "worthy" you're offended and ashamed. Well boo f'n hoo for you. I saw Rocky on Thursday and haven't gotten to Museum yet, but I'm sure I will. So I basically agree with your sentiment that Rocky is going to be a good film, but your pretentious and obnoxious attitude in defending your position is tired and rude. I reported your "Stupid Americans" post but nothing happened, this is my most reserved response. It sickens me to see that comment is deemed appropriate and acceptable, who knows what chaos would have ensued if you chose another country or ethnicity.

My guess is that is should do pretty well this coming week in the 1-2 million per day so if it makes ~7-10 mill during the week and ~ 8 mill over the next weekend, it should have close to that after this weekend...

ROCKY deserves what it got. It ain't that good!
It's a depressing movie watching an old guy we love going in the ring and watching him get hit. And on top of that he's miserable that his kid won't communicate with him and he misses his wife and I'm not mentioning the rest of the problems with the rest of the characters! Yeah, a real feel good holiday movie.

It didn't score a perfect score at ROTTEN TOMATOES, I'm one of those that didn't like the movie. And I'm a huge ROCKY fan! How huge? Back in 1983 I bought COLECO video game system just to play ROCKY. And last year I bought a GAMEBOY just to play one game a ROCKY game.

I really liked Rocky Balboa.

But it is a dark drama for most of the film, and I can't imagine any kid under maybe 12 would enjoy it.

As for adults, and I think women especially, it's a sincere drama.

It's a really nice finale for Rocky but not something for small children at all.

yeah, I can't see how it would be great for the youth. Especially when One night at the Museum has family written all over it on a weekend where it's all about doing things with family members. Add in that everything is closed on monday minus movie theaters so guess where those families will be heading to..

I'm assuming Michael was being a tad tongue-in-cheek, but I'll add that my six year old boy absolutely loved Night at the Museum and would have hated me had I taken him to Rocky Balboa.

I want to see Rocky, but it'll be when it's just me and my wife. I have a feeling a big draw to the movie is going to be the nostalgia factor for those of us who grew up with the movies. That's certainly going to be lost on a six year old.

Plus, I thought Night at the Museum was actually quite a cute flick.

Aren't these numbers kind of low for #6 -#11 ? I'm really surprised to seeing "Charlotte's Web" tanking. It didn't even make 2M on Christmas Day. I've read nothing but great things about it. Will be taking my nieces to see it this week.

<b>DREAMGIRLS</b> is pretty impressive, hitting #2 with only 852 theaters and topping two high-profile titles playing in three times as many theaters (<i>Rocky</i> and <i>Happyness</i>).

(And it seems as if Mel Gibson's latest has gone <i>Apocollapso</i> as far as domestic box office is concerned.)
