Fantasia 2000 - IMAX crowd applauded at the end of each segment.
Pirates of the Caribbean: DMC - Crowd went wild and applauded at the final reveal.
Return of the Jedi - Opening day at some theater in Long Beach, CA. Applause and cheers every chance something happened or someone came on screen (good crowd that morning).

Happens all the time on opening night. Usually with a sequel, or over hyped films.
This year I recall it happened for Babel, Borat, Pirates 2, Volver, Clerks II, For Your Consideration, The Prestige, The Departed... If the crowd is packed and it doesn't totally suck, I usualy find it gets applause.

I honestly don't know if it's just me, but I personally hate applause in regards to movies.
It's different, with a concert or play, where the cast directly interacts with the audience at times, and is there to hear the applause. At that, a sense of accomplishment is earned from the applause, in knowing that what was just put on by the cast/band was welcomed and enjoyed.
However, with movies, it just comes across as, for me, a fairly obnoxious move.

12-21-06, 11:36 PM
I agree. Applause when people are excited for the start or when they are excited to see a character is OK I suppose (it can actually add to the movie experience I think), but at the end of the movie is pretty lame, unless some of the creators are there. Or if the projectionist does an exceptional job:)

However, with movies, it just comes across as, for me, a fairly obnoxious move.
For me, it just shows that people in the audience had a good time. It doesn't matter if the people who made the film are in attendance, it just indecates to me that, "Oh, this guy also thought this film was kick-ass!"
It's just a collective acceptance of something good.

As for The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith, huge applause at the start of each movie as the opening crawl came on screen, and then dead silence after each movie.............(That is such a metaphor for the Prequels, great anticipation, ready to love the movie, big letdown in the end.)

There was dead silence at the end of FOTR when I saw it. I think we were all too blown away to react to it.
The theater was over half full (not opening weekend, but close to it) and for the full three hours, the audience paid complete attention. NO cell phones, NO coughing, NO talking, and maybe 2 instances of people getting up to go to the bathroom. For a three hour movie, that was pretty impressive. There was no mass exodus as soon as the first end credit flashed up on the screen either.

People don't seem to clap after films in New Zealand. Except for the more serious film fans who attend screenings at film festivals, etc. I don't think, no matter how packed the theater or how popular the film, you'd ever see applause at the end of a film that's played in a wide-release theater.

Pirates of the Caribbean: DMC - Crowd went wild and applauded at the final reveal.
That's wierd. I saw this on opening day in a huge filled to capacity theatre. Towards the middle of the movie the crowd was getting a bit restless. At the end, there was dead silence as the crowd shifted out. The only other time I've seen a crowd this quite was the end of The Blair Witch Project.

AT the showing I went to, there was an "oh damn" kind of reaction with a mild aplause at the end, but about 15% of the crowd stayed through the credits (sold out show), and the reveal got a big laugh and applause at the end so go figure on that one.

I remember people cheering loudly at the first-day showing of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King at these sections:
1. When Gandalf whacked Lord Denthor with the staff.
2. When Eowyn first slew the Fell Beast and then the Lord of the Nazgul.
3. When each of the other main characters walked in to greet Frodo after he was rescued from Mount Doom.
4. When King Elessar (ne้ Aragon) kissed Arwen right after the coronation.
5. When everyone bowed to the four hobbits shortly afterward.
6. And a major standing ovation at the end of the film.
