Just bought a new Denon AVR-887, and it has a small problem. I am using a Scientific Atlanta HD cable box, and running the digital audio through the receiver to the speakers. There are three optical audio inputs in the receiver. The DVD player is one, and the Cable is another. However, when I set the TV audio input, the sound will not play. But plugging the cable into the DVD works. This is the problem. When I use the "DVD" functions of the receiver, the audio works, but no audio works when I use the "TV/DBS" functions, the audio does not work. The cable video does not go through the receiver, the video inputs are set to "None" (At first I thought this was the problem) Does anyone have a suggestion?

Apoligies but I need to hijack this thread momentarily. For some reason, since yesterday, the post reply and start thread buttons are not appearing for me anywhere on the site. This is the only thread in any of the forums that had a post reply button. I am logged in. The forum rules box at bottom of pages says everything is turned on and I may post new threads, post replies and edit my posts. I did download an update to my McAfee virus and firewall yesterday. Could McAfee be causing this? I don't see how posting here could be a security threat though. Again I apoligize for using this thread to ask this but is is the only one on the entire site with a post reply button and I'm not getting the new thread button.

rw2516,
Do you have an ad blocker running? Geoff stores those images on the same server as ads, so they get blocked, too.
donald,
2 thoughts. Either your TV has an input instead of an output, or you have to change a setting in the TV to enable your digital out.

donald, you may need to go into the settings and turn on the digital audio on the HD cable box. Try hitting the "Settings" button on the cable remote twice in a row quickly. (I think it is settings) it should bring up a menu where you can play with the options of the HD box.
Let me know if that works.

Also make sure that the "tv input" is set to the correct optical input. I just had to go through all of this last night on the 2307CI (which is almost identical to the 887).
But it did work perfectly after the initial setup.
I have the Scientific Atlanta HD box too - are you using coax or toslink? I used coax, but then had to go into the on-screen menus to set it all up.
That on-screen menu is a godsend. Just would be nice if I could get it to work over HDMI. Of course, plugging in a quick video cable is easy too.
